Rifle and shotgun purchase coming up

Well, I've been wanting to get into hunting big time, and figured Im gonna finally bite the bullet and get a rifle and shotgun. Probably this weekend or early next week.
For rifle I want a 30.06 b/c I hear you can pretty much hunt anything in the US with it. Ammo isn't to expensive, and it is an all around good gun. Went to Bass Pro and was looking around and the guy helped me narrow down to a couple choices. I really wanted a lever action just for pure fun factor, but these bolts are what he helped me find:
1st. Remington 700 in black synthetic for $520 or $620 with stainless barrel
2nd. Mossberg w/ scope for $330 in black as well.
3: Tikka in black or wood for same as remington price.
4: Howa w/ scope for $550

Out of these, which would be the best for a beginner in the hunting world? I really didn't want to spend over 500 for a rifle with scope. Which is leading me towards getting the Mossberg, and throwing a better scope on it. I love the Remington, but its gonna be around 7+ for rifle and scope. Any suggestions?

For Shotguns I am pretty much set on the Remington 870 express or the eqivalent mossberg. Both price around $310-$400.

My ultimate goal was to get both for under 1k, but the rifle situation is throwing me for a loop. I had my mind set on the Rem 770 30 06, but did research and found out it was crap. So now Im just not sure what to go with. All prices are from the local Bass Pro Shop, and I think that is the only gun store here, so I think I am limited to BPS.
Any advice, comments on the guns listed, or any suggestion would be very much appreciated, as you can see, I am very confused with all the choices.

Go check out your local pawn shops for used guns because sometimes you can find some real steals there for a gun and scope combo. I would also look at the paper and see if there are any gun shows going on in your area because there are some deals to be had there as well. The other thing is don't narrow your self down to one cartridge when looking for a rifle and if at all possible shoot some different rifles because making the wrong choice when buying a rifle is not something you want to do. I bought a Remington 700 .300 Win Mag and when I shot it I knew I made a mistake and ended up taking it in the shorts on a trade for the Browning BAR Light Weight 30-06 I have now.

Get the remington. I do a lot of target shooting and long range shooting (600-800yds) I would highly recommend the remington. 30-06 is one of the best calibers there is for power, range, and accuracy. I would suggest the bull barrel models if you ever want to shoot it for fun at targets but it will make it heavier to carry around hunting.

Lever actions are good for hunting close range in the woods and that is it. With a 30-30 and good ammo, you are lucky to kill a deer at 200yds. Bolt actions are much more accurate, easier to clean, upgradable.

$310 is expensive for an 870 Express, let alone $400. Mine was about $275 out the door. Look for a better deal on the shotgun at least. Never really looked at the rifles as I mainly bird and small game hunt.

Have you shot much at all? I'm not saying .30-06 is too much, but it's pretty stout if you are new to shooting.

Trigger control is where it's at. I would have a .22lr and put a few thousand rounds through it. Then progressively move up. Maybe a .30-30 or .243 or 7mm-08 something like that.

Agreed, if you haven't shot a lot then the 06 is probably going to make you jumpy when you start to pull the trigger which in turn will make you verry unaccurate. If you are going to be mainly hunting white tail with it then a 22-250 or a .243 would be the best choice for a beginner. They have plenty of power for white tail and not a lot of recoil.
Edit you might also look at the 25-06 also a very good round.

I have both of these and I have been very happy with them. The Action on the Tikka is amazing, The Howa's is a little more loose but it doesn't really matter. They both hit what I want at 4-500 yards.

I've shot before, just not much. I don't know if three is an area around here for me to test out different calibers, but I'll look into that.
I understand moving up slowly, but I hate having to upgrade on something I just bought. I try to buy something that I can use until it wears out, without having to go better. Plus moving up slowly is usually more expensive, b/c thats 3 rifles instead of just one. I'll try to find a range and see if I can shot an 06 there though. I hear they have some good kick.

Thanks for the info on the 870. That was just Bass Pros price. That is pretty much all I had to go off of here.

It all depends on what you plan on hunting, if your not going after moose or large mule deer then a smaller caliber will be fine.

ill go oahead and say it, but DO NOT buy a new 870 express. remingtons quality has taken a significant plunge in the couple years. the action and everything is alright, but they are rust magnets on the outside. right now mossberg is producing a better quality gun then remington. if you want an 870 get a used one from a pawnshop. if you can find a 70s or 80s wingmaster youll be set. otherwise get a mossberg.

if your willing to spend a bit more coin the Browning BPS and the Ithaca 37 are the two best pumps being made today. They have way more quality then anything mossberg or remington is putting out for the price.

IMO if you can find a used BPS or wingmaster in a pawnshop, jump on it. I got my BPS for $380 in a pawnshop, 12g 28"bl shadowgrass camo, its a couple years old, but retail on it is about $600.

dont bother with a 30-06 lever action, just get a bolt. if remingtons rifles are anything like their 870 expresses, get an R700 thats a couple years old.

get the 30-06, it's a little worse than a 308 but not too much... 308 is a low recoil round. Get a caliber you want, if it kicks you too bad, you can install a muzzle break. My weatherby .300mag has a muzzle break on it. Kicks like a .243 now but it did make it a lot louder.

Don't listen to any BS about remington being low quality, our military and LEO's use remingtons for their sniper rifles and shotguns. Custom machine shops use the remington action and 5r barrel they produce as well.

30/06 isn't to bad. I was nervous about shooting the 300 win/mag, but it wasn't bad either.

Have you looked at gunbroker.com yet?

The Rem 870's can be rust magnets if you really try to not to take care of them. Even minimal upkeep is still enough to keep them from ever jamming.

I have the Mossberg 100 ATR in 30.06. Its a great knock around gun that you won't have any problems taking to the field. It is very accurate and reliable. I paid $250 for the rifle new and mounted a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 DOA 600 reticle for another $140.

X2 i bought my 870 this past june. its been out in the woods in the moisture and through the thick brush and it still looks brand new. ive put about 100 rds through it and havent had any problems yet.
my roommate has a mossberg and it feels like the cheapest piece of crap i have ever shot. im my opinion the remingtons are made a lot better than the mossbergs.
