Think I have pretty much decided on the Remington 700 Buckmaster in 30 06. Seem to go around 530-630 online. Hopefully the local Bass Pro Shop will have it at the cheaper side of that. The mossberg with scope for 330 is still ringing in my ears too.

Undecided on shotguns, have to go feel them out before I decide. Where is the best place to get them? Every where I look, they are 3-4 in camo.

an 870 is a decent gun, but depending on your use, you may want a semi auto. once you shoot a semi you will hate your pump... for skeet any way... i used a friends and it was great...

i need some $$$ for a decent semi auto shotty... looks like im using the good ol trusty 870 for this deer season though...

That brings up a question. Those shotgun combos that come with 2 barrels. Are those pretty much for the people in the shotgun only states so they can shot deer with them as well? I only plan on shooting bird with mine, so should I even consider the combo ones?

My 'mossy' pump shotgun I bought a few years ago came with 2 barrels. 1 was a long duck barrel, the other was a shorter barrel with a full choke, ported, and sights on it for turkey hunting.

I think I paid around $379 for it about 4 years ago.

a good gunshop or an outdoors store like cabelas, bass pro will have a bunch of them.

just go out and find one that fits you, that is the most important thing for a shotgun. I wanted to get a nova but didn't like the grip on it.

find one that just naturally points for you and you will be happy.

I'VE GOT BOTH 870 REMINGTON 12ga AND MOSSBERG.I LIKE THE 870 WAY BETTER. GOT MINE USED-2 BARRELS AND A SOFT CASE FOR 100 BUCKS SOME YEARS BACK, SO LOOK AROUND. AS FOR THE RUST, MINE'S A FEILD GUN AND IT DOES RUST. JUST USE A LITTLE W-D AND SYNTHETIC STEEL WOOL THEN SOME CAR WAX-WORKS LIKE A CHAMP!

Ok, need some quick help. Walmart has a remington 700. not 770, but 700 in the realtree camo with a scope for $470. I'm sure the scope is crap, but how can their price be so much lower then everyone else? I've looked for days and the only realtree Remington 700 in 30.06 that I can find is called the Buckmaster edition. But, the cheapest I found is 550, with no scope. BPS is charging 670 with no scope. So, here are my questions that I really need help with:
Does remington make cheaper rifles just for walmart?
Is there another Remington 700 in realtree camo that is not the buckmaster edition?
How is their price so much lower?

On a side note, they also had 870s. With shotguns, I am looking to use it for bird and turkey hunting. I assume get a 12 guage, but what size barrel should I be looking to get. . Also, whats this choke stuff about?

Walmart does have lower prices on rifles and the scopes they put on them are crap most of the time, see if you can purchase just the rifle for cheaper...

Shotguns should come with 3 different chokes, all of mine have. An improved, modified, and Full choke. For barrel length, if you are duck hunting a 26" should be fine, anything shorter than that and it will be a little harder to make a further away hit.

Ok, as long as the 30.06 isn't some lower junk model, I should be coming home today with a purdy new remington. I wrote down all the features of the buckmaster, so I know what to look for. Even though it comes with a junk scope, I'll probable still use it for a little bit. I'm gonna order a nikon buckmaster very soon though.
For the shotgun, the choices are 26" or 28" barrel. I held a few different makes, and the 870 seems to come to my shoulder just right. Benali didn't feel right, and the mossberg felt good, but the 870 felt great. Gotta figure out what barrel length, then I should be good to go on that as well.

Just remember this about barrel length. Generaly the longer barrel is used for open areas with longer shots and tighter chokes (full choke). This would be like trap shooting from the handicap lines,I like my 28" for trap. the shorter barrel would be better for more confined areas like trees or canyons. the shortie works good when you need to make quick turns to get your shot, like Quail or skeet. You usually find the more open chokes on short barrels (modified or improved cyl.). I have a 28" mod. and 20" improved for my 870,the 28"is a good general barrel to start with and most of the new ones come with changable chokes, so if the length fits you then you are set with only 1 barrel.

Thanks jgger.

Well, went back to WalMart, and it wasn't the buckmaster. It wasn't even realtree camo. Instead it was mossy oak. Wish I would of had them take it out of the box yesterday to look at it. Oh well, no worries. I went ahead and got a Remington 700 30.06 with black stock. Came with a Remington scope as well. Grabbed the 5 boxes of remington 150 grain that they got in last night too. So all in all, I was out the door for $595 with a new rifle and 100 rounds. Plans are, I'll soon be replacing the scope. Plan on replacing the stock too. You can pick up a realtree stock for about $100.
So I'l sell my black stock, remington scope, and get the $40 mail in rebate, and try to make some money back. Scope and new stock are gonna run me around $300, so hopefully, I can get at least $100 from the other stuff.

Will get some pics up soon. Wanted to go to the range today, but spent 3 hours and $300 in Bass Pro Shop today, loading up on hunting gear. I better get a buck this year.

I've been considering a .223 AR, but recently a SKS caught my eye for its price...

Here she is. Straight from the store. I have since added a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 scope. I also have a realtree stock that is suppose to arrive this Thurday.

Crappy cell phone pics. Will get better ones once new stock is here.
I tried to make them a little artsy.

Nice 700. Although it is a 'bargain' model, I'm guessing it will shoot better than you (or most anyone else) can point it.

Now, about the shotgun. Save money. First, decide on what game you are after. Will you need a magnum, or not?

Then, as mentioned above, go find a >used< Browning BPS or a Wingmaster. They've been on the market for decades, and other than lawyer tweaks, are the same piece they've been since the Colonel designed them.

I'd recommend a 28" barrel, with a choke system (Remchoke, for instance). Buy a Full, Skeet and Cylinder choke tube. Those will cover about anything you would want to shoot, including slugs.

Also, get a gun with a ventilated rib barrel. That will be helpful, especially at the range, to keep a decent sight picture when the barrel heats up.

If you think you will be after deer or pig, you will eventually want a slug barrel. You may want to use the scope that came with the 700, but most folks go with a pointer (like AimPoint) rather than a scope.

There are two shops I'd recommend you visit. The first is Po Boys in Defuniak Springs, and Outcast Fishing and Hunting on Barrancas, down by NASP. Very helpful folks at both stores, and you may even find a piece you like.

HTH!
