I shoot a Ruger M77 Hawkeye 300Win Mag. Shooting 130 grain Barnes TTSX. Some may vouch it's overkill but I love the combo.

You might want a close range/high power rifle for maybe hunting in thick woods. I have a Marlin .45-70 on order right now. It's the new 1895 SBL.
Nice choice. I've got a Marlin .444P guide gun.

I have a Winchester M70 7MM Mag. using 150 grain Nosler Ballestic tips, a 243, compound bow, Marlin 30/30, and a muzzle loader. Thinking about adding to the pile.

I use a Savage .270 most of the time, but I've got a Remington .243 that I also use for deer, mostly for coyotes

I have been wanting to go hunting since I was a teen...Short story, my dad was sick with cancer for 6 years...died on my 16th B-day....never got a chance to go hunting, but did plenty of fishing....lost interest in wanting to go, but now it has hit me again...now back to the question at hand.

I'm finally going deer hunting up in nothwest GA the second weekend of Dec. A good friend of mine owns 25 acres of land that backs up to 1,200 acres of untouched forest!

My friend has killed deer every year for the past 10 years. In fact, his 11yo son killed a 7 point last Dec...hope I'm that lucky!

I was not sure exactly on what gun to buy since there are sooo many choices, so another buddy of mine is loaning me a Howa 1500 30-06 with a Leupold scope. It is sighted in at 100 yards so I should be good to go.

I have been doing some research and this is what I want to buy when I get the $$$

TIKKA T3 LITE STAINLESS in a 30-06 and a Leupold or Nikon scope

One of the SMOOTHEST actions I have seen!

If you are buying this to use in the piney woods, you're looking for a short range rifle that uses a heavy bullet that doesn't need to travel at the speed of light. A lever action may make sense if you walk and hunt. It's short and easy to maneuver. There are a variety of cartridges for lever guns from little to far too big for your purposes like the 45-70. The cartridge is almost as big as the deer. I'd look at the 30-30 because it is fairly easy to find ammo and is cheap to shoot. But there is the 32 Winchester Special, 375 Winchester, or the 35 Remington if you prefer something a little out of the ordinary for East Texas hunting. If the price of ammo is not important, go back to some of the original cartridges like the 38-55 or the 40-65 but expect ammo to cost dollars per round. If money is not an issue, look for an old Winchester. If you don't want to spend a thousand or more, look at the Marlins. You should be able to pickup a Marlin for a couple of hundred bucks or so at the Dallas or Houston gunshows. You pretty much have the bases covered with the 243 and the 06. Yer now getting into "what ya feel like" territory from now on with the gun buying.

Due to rifle restrictions in Indaina, I use a Marlin 1894...44Mag, Rem. 870 shotgun, or TC Omega muzzle loader. However I like using a bow the most.
