Computer (MS Word) Question

Computer (MS Word) Question
I'm having some trouble figuring out my problem with Microsoft Word.
For some reason, I've got 2 different WORD type files, and only one of them is readable on my computer.
I recall installing a newer version of Office one of my friend's brought over, and I think this has something to do with it.
It was quite a while ago, so I don't recall the specifics.
Here's a screenshot of the two different word files:

The icons are rather small, so after you click on the link, click on the picture again, and it will zoom in a little.
The file type on the left works for me perfectly.
The file on the right, when I click on it, the document opens up, but it's all a bunch of squares.
Anyone know how I can convert the unviewable files to the new file type that my system recognizes?
Thanks
Habibi

it looks like one document is a microsoft word file and the other is a word pad file? Have you tried right clicking and using "open with" and then selecting microsoft word. The only other thing i can think of is that maybe one of the files is a word 2007 file wihich makes the extention .docx . If thats the case then you cant open the newer file with an older version of microsoft word. Any more specifics on the files would be helpful

As far as specifics. what can I tell you that might help diagnose the problem?

Open any folder (My Documents, My Computer, My P4on...whatever), then click the Tools menu. Next click Folder Options. Now click the View tab at the top. There is a checkbox in there that says "Hide extensions for known file types" Uncheck that box. Now, click the button that says "Apply to All Folders", then click OK.
Report back to us the full filenames.

.doc at the end of it.
The other one says
.docx at the end of it.
Is this what you mean?

Yes, it's simple if you know what to look for.
I took a look around in there, it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
I typed "add-on in the search thingy, I'm really not sure what to look for, but thanks.

The .docx file needs either Word 2007 or a converter to open. The converter is compatible with Word 2000, XP (2002) and 2003.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it, now I can read my files again.
Beers on me if you're ever in my neck of the woods.
Thanks again.
