I talked to a car importer the other day and he told me he imported a Corvette last week from the U S to Canada and had to pay a 6.1 % import tax that is only paid on foreign imports. When he asked why, he was told that more than 60% of the car is foreign. Parts from Mexico etc. So which brands are now domestic? The imports that employ Americans may have more domestic parts than the domestic brands that import all their parts and assemble in America.

 

Yeah, funny thing about the Corvette if you think about it.

actually, mr. chevrolet was a swede. the canadian system is to tax every thing. they are just labeling the corvette as foreign because they can. After all, it is a united states company right? that automaticly makes it foreign to canada right?

 

Hmmm... not as simple as it seems... If it was made and sold in Canada all the taxs would be paid, when it is exported to the US or else where some of the taxs are not implemented but if that or other products are imported into Canada those taxs now are due for collection plus other import taxs. There are changes for personal usage and consumption vs commercial import for redistribution and resale. All so what counts is the nature of the product. Autmotive cars, vintage cars and parts, food items, textiles etc, all are dif.

 

I'm just curious, what the hell is NAFTA for anyway?... Canada, US, and Mexico.

Last year I had to pay a $60 duty on "excess gasoline" in the back of my truck (in a bulk tank) when I was driving from Alaska to the lower 48. Is NAFTA only a "free" trade agreement for companies or what?

 

There are charges of $100.00 for air conditioning tax and about $300.00 for administrative costs but no 6.1 tax if the car is built in Canada or U. S. unless the percentage of parts over 60% is foreign. Meaning not Canadian or American. He saved $25000 over list by importing rather than buying here.

 

Isn't Mexico in "Central America?"

 

NAFTA only benefits manufacturers and other businesses - it does NOTHING for individuals.
