"Sicko", MTv's Kurt Loders' assessment

I don't know if people here plan on seeing Sicko. I don't.

I found this article interesting. Yes, it's MTv. Yes it's Kurt Loder. No, this isn't news. It is, however, a rebuttle of sorts. You'de have to verify what MTv is saying. I think it's good food for thought though.

One side of the story can seem pretty compelling. That doesn't change that there is another side to the story.

Not enough people are going to want to see this type of rebuttle. Because one side of the story is compelling, there often isn't a desire to seek additional information.

It's a bit of a read, but I think some will find it interesting. That is if you care anything about the Health Care situaiton in this country.

MTv-'Sicko': Heavily Doctored, By Kurt Loder

Moore is just a guy who makes movies to fit his agenda. They are not factual and there is no entertainment value.

I wont be watching it.

Ah, yes, then we can get on 3-4 month waiting lists for sub par medical care too. Sign me up! Wait, that already goes on...it's called CANADA!

I'll stick to the current system where as long as you aren't a lazy slob and get a half decent job you can earn the best medical care in the world

I think you took what I wrote wrong- which was my bad since I wasn't very clear. I was just pointing out why we shouldn't go universal as well.

As for that rating? That's obviously taking several factors into consideration such as availability, afford ability, etc.

With premium insurance or unlimited funds the US of A is the place to be for hardcore surgery.

Still, overall, we're not number 1. If it was free everywhere, I'd still think a few places might be ahead of us, I mean look at all of the recent hospital 'scandals' on the news...aint lookin to pretty

what you talking about free?? Nothing is free. If we had universal health care our taxes would be thru the roof like canada and europe are. No thanks. No one is denied care in the US. The problem with our health care is lawyers. Unjustified law suits are what drive up costs for every one and makes insurance unaffordable. That and the illegal imigrants using the system and we all have to pay for that. Fix the real problem and keep government out of health care.

*I* see what you're saying, but I don't think that's an accurate statement. Overall, if you looked at the most advanced procedures, the US has got to be at the very very top of that list with cost aside.

free health care for everyone would be a disaster. my grandfather in england needed a new hip really really bad. he was told the wait would be 4-6 months. he paid for his own surgery and had a new hip 3 days later

and it wont be free. as someone said we would be taxed through the roof. and besides we already have free health care here, as long as you are an illegal immigrant

I heard a review of the movie from a "middle-of-the-road" radio personality in Denver.

His summary was this...

Moore shows the worst of our healthcare system, and the best of other country's heathcare systems, and then contrasts them. He doesn't show anything bad from theirs, or any good from ours.

However, this guy's review ended with an outstanding point. He said that you can tell which system produces the best doctors by observing where other country's leaders head when they have serious health issues.

With the exception of Castro, nearly all the rest seek medical attention right here in the United States.

If Moore comes down with some terminal illness, I doubt he'll head to Germany or Canada. Of course, he may not be able to find a doctor willing to treat him anymore here in the States.

You forgot to mention the 20% sales tax and the 50% income taxes.

First off, I am not trying to talk bad about another county. I am instead pointing out the folly that is socialized medicine.
I have been to hospitals in the United States and in France. For comparison one of the hospitals here is definitely second rate, it is old, lacks a lot of the new equipment and is in a smaller town. The hospital in France was just outside Paris in an affluent neighborhood and is considered to be one of the better ones in the area by the locals. The second rate US hospital was WAY cleaner, air conditioned and only had sealed sterilized equipment. The French hospital was not air conditioned, all of the cotton swabs etc were in an open pouch on the wall. I saw a fly land on them. I was seen by two doctors, four nurses and a x-ray tech none of them ever washed their hands. I was glad that I only had a broken bone and no open wounds. As a person that has used our health care and socialized health care, I prefer our version. Sure it appears to cost more, but that is because we only pay when we use it not every time that we buy something.

I don't get it, you pay several hundred dollars a Month now for "health care" that they May approve or Disapprove depending on your Insurance company. Cut some of this government spending and put some of that cash into "taxes" to cover health Care and let's get this system over hauled.

I'd rather pay 150 dollars a month more in Taxes and SAVE the 300 bucks a month I'm paying for Crappy health care (which is actually not too Bad compared to other plans out there...)

Right now it Sucks!

I would watch it. I’ve seen a few of his other films and some were quite good such as “Roger and Me”. His agenda is not as important to me as I use my own critical thinking skills to form my opinions. (I agree with him on some topics and disagree on others.) I would assume there will be some interesting anecdotal cases in the film, however, health care is a complex problem and I doubt Mr. Moore's film has any answers.

Most of us don't pay hundreds a month for "health care", we pay hundreds a month for health insurance.

We know how insurance works. We pay into a pool. If there aren't a lot of people drawing from that pool of money, than we don't need to pay as much in. If a lot of people are drawing from the pool, we have to pay more in. If there are people drawing from the pool that don't pay in, we have to pay even more.

"Health care" is something different than health insurance. I tend to believe that we should be responsible for paying for our health care. We should shop around for the best price, like we do on just about every other good/service we spend our money on. You don't use your auto insurance to pay for oil changes or new tires. You don't use your home owners insurance to pay for new windows or a roof. Why are we using health insurance for check ups and exams?

If health insurance was expressly for the major issues and we paid for our health care with our own money (perhaps with a health care savings account) then the health insurance premiums would be lower. If fewer people were drawing from the pool....

The government should ABSOLUTELY NOT be putting cash into "taxes" to cover health care. We chould stop relying on the government to take care of our health care. We don't expect the government to help us buy electronics from Best Buy. Why would we want them to help us with our health care decisions?

There are too many people dependant on the government (that is the TAX PAYERS!) already. We shouldn't be making people, more people, more dependant. We should be telling people it's time to get with the program and take care of ourselves. How about a little accountability?

The thing that I don't get is these people who want the government to overhaul the health system, right after they've gone on a tiraid about how incompetent the government is. You really think that the government can do a good job of running a health care system for three hundred million plus people? The government has said (well, representatives of the government) there is no way to find and deport twelve million illegal immigrants. How on earth are we supposed to believe that they can do health care better than it's already being done?
