Post Even shorter telescoping TT mirrors

Does anyone think it is feasible to make the mirrors telescope in a little farther by maybe cutting the supporting bars at the mirror end or the base end. I have a clearance problem and I need the mirrors to retract another inch or 1 1/2 inches. I know this will lessen the max extended length, but I am not concerned about that. Help!! I need the clearance.

I don't know about that except that I am really miffed at Ford for making those mirrors telescoping for the 2000 models. I thought that they telescoped when I ordered them on my 99. Imagine my surprise when I realized that they did not. They look so goofy hanging way out there. I tried to shame Ford on an 'e' mail complaining about them doing this, but , I got no response from them. That does not surprise me, they do not have a very good customer satisfaction policy, the just like to say they have one. I love my truck but the company sucks! Does anyone know if their is a way to fit the 2000 mirrors to the 99? $$?

LL, the mirrors should retro fit into your housing. I would think that they would be expensive though!

Thumbs up

LiveOak -
I have NO clearance problem when driving. But I do occasionaly suffer a clearance problem in parking lots.
I just lower the window, reach out and fold the mirror back against the truck. When I'm past the clearance problem, I just push the mirror back out.
Sometimes, in crowded parking lots, I just fold both mirrors back to make it easier to walk past the truck.

Roger, Thanks for the response, I checked my dealers parts dept. And he told me it would cost about $300 and he could not tell me if it didn't involve some electrical change, he was not very co-operative in pursuing the facts about the possible conversion. Funny, but it seems like I used to get much better advise from these people in the past, it seems like the people in those positions today are not very knowledgable, or just don't care.

Power TTT mirrors(part# YC3Z-17682-FAA and YC3Z-17683-FAA) are a direct replacement for non-tele mirrors. I just ordered a set of TTT power/heated(same as above but end in -GAA) mirrors for an excursion, I will update how the install goes.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but is it Ford's fault that you assumed the mirrors were power telescoping on your 99? If a dealer told you the truck had it and it didn't, that is bad. But, if you just assumed the truck did, whose fault is it? The brochure does not say power telescoping in 1999.

There would be an electrical impact to your truck. You'll have to add the switch to make them telescope.

Tim A,

The telescoping part of the trailer tow mirrors is MANUAL! So therefore (I'm not trying to be a jerk here), I must say we should not talk about things that we do not know! A mirror from a 99 will fit a 2000. If you currently have manual TT mirrors, you will need to replace them with manual telescoping TT mirrors.

My mistake was in assuming that they telescoped. If one looks at them on a lot, it is a logical assumption as they are really hanging out there and they have the appearance (structurally speaking) that they telescope. I was so convinced by that appearance that I did not visit the issue with the dealer when ordering. Thank you 'Truckin4' for coming to my defense and setting the record straight on the application. A postscript that I can share is that I was told that the original '99' mirrors were supposed to have been telescoping but that the manufacture did not have the tooling completed and they had to forego the telescoping feature till '2000'

I goofed when I was typing. I was thinking about the new 2000 Navigator mirrors which have a power fold in feature. Sorry about that.

I really wasn't trying to be rude, I was only saying just because you made an erroneous assumption, doesn't mean Ford is at fault. Generally, it is good when more features are added to a vehicle. But, it's like buying a computer, there is always a better one coming out next month.

SDF250_mn -
Let me know how they install, look (post pics), etc. Maybe they'll save me the trouble of "manual fold-in".
Good luck
