Post bikes on roof?

On the road I have occasionally seen standing bicycles lashed to rooftops.

Is there a special product that allows bikes to be safely transported in this manner?

(A hitch-mounted bike carrier is not an option. There is already a trailer attached to the hitch. Similarly, I don't want to install a trailer bumper bike carrier because of weight balance concerns.)

Thanks in advance...

For the roof, my suggestion is Yakima or Thule. Both available at REI or most bike shops. It will set you back a few hundred though.
But they are worth it.

You can still get a hitch mounted carrier from Reese, Drawtite etc. that carries the bikes and has a hitch ball behind that. It is an extended draw bar. There are plenty of sites on the web or you can go to a RV supply and they will have order books. Good Luck
