Lightbulb Underdrive performance pulleys

Have any of you guys tried installing underdrive pulleys on your EXP's???? If so , please post results. I installed them on my 93 Lightning a while back and they work great!!!! I'm seriously considering getting them for my EXP too. on my L they cost me about $90 for pulleys then around $30 for new shorter belt. I gained nearly 2mpg the one week I was able to keep my foot out of the throttle.

If you are towing, I wouldn't get them because they slow down the waterpump and alternator. Otherwise, it shouldn't be a problem.

There are lot's of posts about them. From what I've seen, I would definitly not to a 3 peice set, just 2. The alternator is the one that causes the most problem, again, from what I've read.

Something I read in the Lighnting forum was about the water pump specificly. About slowing it down because at higher RPMs the pump is moving water through too fast for it to cool effectivly. I'm not sure that's something we'd have to worry about in an Expy. Click the image to open in full size. Not sure many get run at the track.

Something doesn't sound right here. Installing smaller diameter pulleys on accessories would speed them up. Changing the crank pulley to a smaller diameter would slow things down. So, which pulleys are you changing?

The set for my lightning was a 3 piece set, crank, water-pump, and alternator pulleys. And they were definitely worth every penny spent. I don't know what I gained performance wise, but I could definitely feel the difference. I also gained about 1.5 mpg under normal driving conditions. The set I got was considered POWER & AMP set. No power(electrically) problems either..

You're right sounds wierd. They're under-drive so I think it means a smaller crank pully so the drag is less, and larger accy pully's so they drag even less.

I've thought about it but would like to see/hear some results. I've heard one person post that he had an alternator problem. At idle power dropped so if he had the heqadlights on, they'd dim a lot. If you have any other extra power hungry things like bad a$$ sounds system it might do the same.

It does make sense though. I also like the electric fan idea.

Yeah, I've heard several stories about alternator related problems with many underdrive pulley kits, but March Performance took these problems into consideration when they came out with the POWER and AMP series. I have had no problems thus far, 200W amp pushing two 10" subs. This is one of the first mods most of the Gen 1 lightning guys make, and many have high-powered stereos. I don't know for sure if March Performance makes some power and amp pullies for Exp's, I have seen other brands. Unless I can hear the good reports about these other brands/sets of pulleys, I'll be as reserved about installing them as you are. But if March ever makes a set of POWER and AMP pulleys for Exp's, I'll be the ginnie pig!!

sixguy,

Then definetly post if you do it. I'd love to see the results. I'm out of mods and looking for something to get it going faster. Ya I know, it's an Expy. Click the image to open in full size.
