How To: Replace Mirror Turn Signal Lamp (00-02 models)
Ok, after asking lots of questions and with only a couple of answers, here is the deal on changing out / replacing a light bulb in the mirror housing of the 00-02 model Expeditions and F-150s that have the little red indicator on the outside edge of the mirror housing.
This is long, but here goes.
THE BULB
* the original bulb is a 921, Sylvania makes a LL921
* the 922s and others fit BUT... they are lower powered.
* the 921 is rated at MSCP:21 (21 candle power)
* other 900 series bulbs are less (the 922 is a MSCP:15)
* there ARE LED versions of the 921 available relatively cheap, but the light output pattern is of a directional nature and does not work well for bright illumination.
The PROCESS:

Tilt the mirror all the way down and slightly to the outside to get it ALL the way down
Look inside the housing just above the mirror and you will see 2 tabs above the mirror on the mirror back
Using a long flat blade, Pry UP slightly on the tabs to release them. Do the outside one first, then the inside one.
Then pull the mirror housing back (towards the front of the truck) being very careful not to pull too far, to pull the wiring or break the bottom tabs off.
Twist the bulb connector out, then pull the bulb out of the connector and replace the bulb.
Re-assemble in reverse order
Here are the tabs at the top (you can kinda make them out in the highlighted area) Outside tab first, then inside tab)
A view of the tabs (are good digital cameras and imaging tools great for bringing stuff in the picture out that are really there in the dark!)
Here is the bulb socket.
Re-assemble in reverse order.
** disclaimer ** I am not responsible for you messing up your own stuff, this is merely an instructional aid.
Good Luck and Later
Greg
