Question Possible Exhaust leak?...

What noise should i be looking for if i think i have an exhaust leak?? Right now everytime i get next to a median, wall, or other car i hear what sounds to be someone blowing air out of their mouth and waving a card or their hand in front of it...kinda like a "putt-putt-putt-putt" sound. (Sorry for the bad simile, i will try to get a video that has a good sound clip of it.)

i have been told its the lifters, but i know they arent that loud!

any help?

thanks,

The way to find a leak is to crawl under and inspect any clamped/flanged areas for black or light colored smoke on the pipe, and in the surrounding areas.

your body style is famouse for manifold studs breaking causing a manifold leak. it will sound like a tick and get louder as you accelerate. thats where i would start looking. like darren said look for black tracers also.

yea thats what the guy who installed my exhaust. but i really dont feel like messing with the freakin manifolds!! unless it gets to the point to where it is messing with something....can this effect emissions tests? i would think so....

and are clamps or cat heatshields known for rattling? because i have this annoying rattle everytime i stop, and it sounds metal to metal, but idk where to even begin to look for that..... =-S

Heat shields tend to rattle if they are rusted and break loose somewhere. Clamps wont really rattle, if they fail they'll just make the truck louder by dropping the exhaust a little, or cause a big leak and stealing your exhaust note.

well i just had them checked last week, and the guy said everything is perfectly fine with them, but he did seeing alittle dittereration in the left precat...so in the near future i might save up and replace them all at once when one goes bad...

alrighty...well i might crawl up under her tomorow evening, once the heat disipates, and check the heat shields around all 4 cats...it sounds like the passenger side mainly. thanks darren!

No problem. Good idea to let the heat wear out, when we cut my rear cats we cut one when it was still hot, got a few nice burns
