Im ready to replace my exhaust and magnaflow seems to be what everyones going with but what would be best for my 97 4.6L ext.cab. I would like something with a really deep/loud sound. Should i have highflow cats too??
And can i install it myself without too much trouble. Some part numbers would be awesome!!

check my sig--you can get the mufflers off ebay or a monroe muffler(same thing as a flowmaster 10 series-less$) and the pre-bent 3" mandrel pipe i got from monroe also--P.S. muffler is a VR10 series (single chamber)
for that deep AND loud sound, you can just put a muffler on and dump it. i have a 14" magnaflow dumped right under the front of the bed and it sounds good. total cost was like $80 for muffler+turndown+extra clamp
putting on was an adventure to get the old one off. if you have a reciprocating saw, then this makes it very easy.
i had an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel but i still got it done. it took me an hour and a half to get the old one off just because i made a couple unnecessary cuts. i cut off the rusted clamp before the muffler but the pipes were rusted together so i just ended up cutting the head pipe. i also had to finish a couple of the cuts off with the hacksaw because i didnt haven enough room to operate the grinder.
putting the muffler and turndown on took about 30 seconds. then i spent about 5 minutes making sure the clamps were as tight as possible. i did end up taking it to a shop and have them put a hanger on it.
For deep and aggressive loud, get a singl inlet dual outlet Flowmaster Super 44 ( part #9430452.
For the same ( or maybe a bit more ) volume in a deeper clearer sound, get an 11" Magnaflow body ( part # 11366and in the long run cut the rear converters out, or add the hi-flow converters whatever your more comfortable.
For a more mild sound, with a single inlet & dual outlet configuration, get a 14" body Magnaflow ( part #12198. Gives you the dual look and almost the same sound as the single 11", but a bit quieter.
Hi-flow cats flow better than OEM cats and volume it up much more. You dont need them but if you want added sound & possible mileage gains, it could be worth it. If you go with the Super 44, you probably wont need hi-flow cats cause those mufflers are quite loud.
Fair warning though, 1997 truck, if you change the cats you may need to get all 4 O2 sensors replaced, and thats pretty pricey, so if you decide to change them to hi-flows, have a couple hundred aside for O2 sensors if yours go bad.
I did buy two for my F150 but I changed my mind and went with the Magnaflows for performance reasons. I lost the receipt so I kinda got stuck with the Super 44s, but if removal of my pre-cats does not please me with the 11" bodies, i'll pull them out and put the Super 44s in possibly. And i'll end up keeping both, clamped in, that way if I gotta tow or drive far I could put the Magnaflows in for the economy & calmer sound, and have the Super 44s for summer and causing hell So it may work out well.

If your cutting the rears out and running only the pre-cats, leaving the factory pre-cats should be just fine. The shop should re-locate your O2s for you to prevent a CEL. Getting a shop to do it depending on your area may be difficult,its not exactly a legal procedure, but these trucks dont need all these restrictive cats.
If you decide not to go through, and want to replace them with aftermarked hi-flow cats, I would suggest Magnaflow cats, any 94000 series, 3 that I know that will be guarantee'd to work would be part #94106., #94006, and #94306. The differences between these cats are, 94106 is a 9" length body, it will be the loudest and shortest, 94006 is the base model, 12"s long and louder than 94306. 94306 is a calmer version of 94006, Troyer Performance recommends them. I would go with the 94006s or the 94106s.
