True Duals on a 5.4??

I just bought a 2005 F150 FX4 with the 5.4. Ive heard of people taking the y-pipe off their exhaust and doing straight pipes from the cats back. anybody done this to their truck or have any suggestions? Problems? It is something I'm looking into and would appreciate any advice or assistance with this. thanks a lot!

-Mike

Hello & Welcome!

Decided to skip the whole Welcome Wagon thang, eh?

Well - sure many have done what you describe - certianly nothing new.

BUT - it's going to sound like crap (although you may like it as sound is 110% subjective, at the end of the day). And did I mention LOUD? Oh, yeah.

You may lose some bottom-end torque if yer not careful - keep the pipe diameter @ 2.25" for best grunt preservation. No crimp/crush bends if you can avoid it - mandrel all the way. Do not dump it. Add some nice tips and yer done.

Try to incorporate some sort of crossover, position determined by this: Installed X Pipe = Instant DRONE <-- Post #9 in that thread

Good news is - you can add a couple Magnapacks later if it's planned correctly, in case you find the resulting sound objectionable.

Lastly - read the stickies in the Exhaust forum, and bone up on the Search features - there is a TON of great info related to you topic on here.

AND - listen to this: Headers installed!

Good luck!

I have what you described, it don't sound like crap cause I wouldn't have it on my truck if it did, I have 2.25" piping with 4" tips turned out at a 45 degree, sounds good and mean and loud in my op. and the whole losing power/torque thing, that didn't happen to mine and my 5.4 is stock except for pipes and 34's, no programmer, you'll be good.

One man's traysh is anuthern's trayshur, I reckon.

OP,

Like MGD said, you can certainly try it out and see if you like it. However, make sure the shop routes everything to where you can always insert mufflers later because, more than likely, you won't like it.

Unless 'loud' = 'good' in your mind, I bet you'll be putting mufflers (NOT Fartmasters) in place at some point.

Welcome!

LMAO!! You? Not nice?

Thankee! Hell, I even surprised myself with that one! I did conduct a couple of quick, self-edits before posting, though.

OP, since you're new here, do yourself a favor. There are two fellers who have posted in your thread who have a ridiculous amount of knowledge regarding our trucks and vehicles, in general. One of 'em is NOT me, and the uther'n AIN'T mch0146! That ortta narry it down a right-smart bit fer ye!

MGDfan and tarajerame have forgotten more than most folks will ever know about all things mechanical. Go through some of their posts and just make like a sponge. You will be amazed at how much you'll learn!

Now, these fellers ain't gonna kill ye wif kindness all the time (), but their unique deliveries are always seasoned with invaluable information. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the occasional brow-beating fer being a dumbass is WELL worth the price of admission for the front row seat.
