Which Cold Air Intake For '08 5.4? Heard of "knock off Flowmaster Super 44s"?
S&B, Volant, AEM Bruteforce, Banks Ram Air, AFE, AF1...which is the best? Closed box style like Volant and S&B or open like AEM, AFE, and AF1? Im looking for the drone air suction type sound. But still want input on all brands and type of box.
Also I have been looking into an exhaust, but only going to the the muffler swap. Heard to go with the Super 44, a local muffler shop guy I know said he has a "knock off" no name muffler that is identical to the Super 44 and will sell it for $75 installed. Deal or no deal?
i went with K&N. i like there products. i definately wanted the open filter setup. you can hear the air being sucked in thru the filter. heres a pic of my setup:
The knock offs sound ok, not as good as a true flowmaster though. Better performance can be expected with an enclosed intake. I dont like the K&Ns open design, it allows for warm engine temp air to be sucked in.
Get a dynomax bullet part # 24215. You can get it for 37.78 with free shipping from amazon.
I've had glasspacks...they're FKN annoying...I had a 95 silverado with a 350 5.7L and it had tru duals and 18" glasspks and it was too much like a pissed off weedeater...

The heat off the motor is being sucked toward the radiator fan, thus it never reaches the air intake box with open designer...correct me if I am wrong...just my thoughts.

Have you ever lifted your hood in the summer with the truck running?
Gotts Mod is your best bang-for-the-buck intake modification. Bill @ PHP did dyno testing and found that the average improvement for CAIs with custom tunes was 16 hp. The Gotts mod was about 13 hp. Personally I'm running an AF1 3".
As for the open box vs closed box...

TP has found that the stock intake runs the second coolest only beaten by the Airforce-1 which TP lists for $239 on his website. With this modification you are getting a lot colder air into your engine than most of the aftermarket intake kits on the market today. It could potentially be colder as well but we wont know for certain until someone data logs the IAT with both intakes.
The AF1 is open box and Troyer has found that it runs cooler than the Gotts mod, which pulls air straight from the fender walls. This tells me that the difference is negligible between open and closed box setups.
i think the whole "gotts mod" is a joke...all he did was take he intake tube that goes into the fender and make it 1" bigger in diameter...THATS IT...i dont see why so many people are over it...
Maybe because it's been dyno'd and proven that it provides near the same performance increase for an extremely small fraction of the cost. Personally had I known about it before buying the AF1 I would have saved my $400 bucks and given it a try.
If you're looking for the best out of box CAI, though, I think (key words) that it's been proven that AF1 is the best performing, although the difference is negligible. It also has the air-suction drone sound you're looking for.

ill go ahead and reply and then i gotta get to bed, will check in the morning...but why could a person just take a CAI style air filter and attach to it the end of the intake tube and remove the stock air filter?
