its all about pressure waves created buy the diffrent metals, even differnt wall thickness will change the sound and power.
I come from a fairly heavy two stroke background where pipes is where all your power comes from, wall thickness, alloy, shape and bends, even total length makes a diffrence. you wont notice very much performance diffrence with the 4 stroke engines(unless you uncapping a restriction) but the sound and pitch will change dramaticly

no, steel grade doesn't change tone, the only thing that could is the bends.

I just stated that the only mufflers that sound good for V6s are aluminized, aka Flowmasters. There is the overlooked t-409 version of mufflers but you need to call Flowmaster for part #s and to order SI/DOs. Summits selling the SI/SO Super 44s and 40s now.
