I just put on my modified intake tube last weekend and am happy with the results! The total cost for me was around $12. Of course the only problem I had was grinding down the end of the tube that goes into the fender. After a dozen trips from the bench grinder to my truck, I finally got it to fit. Make sure you have that tube cut to the proper length because I busted my first tube on the saw trying to cut it to length. Also watch out for the "stock snorkel" because it has a little angle on it, which in turn makes the modified tube a little bit of a tight fit.
I noticed some other replies talking about a "silencer" in the L tube. Where is it located approximately and does anybody have a pic of it? I would like to make my truck sound as mean as possible without tearing it up too much.
By the way I call my new modification my "Redneck Intake"!
i was also wonderin where the silencer is..i'll go out and fart around with it for a while, maybe i will figure it out. if i do i will let you know jlr128!!

actually, i just asked bill at php about it today. he said that since the maf is in the intake elbow, if you increase the diameter of the tube, then unmetered air is passing around the maf, meaning you are running lean. also, i think that the 5.4 3v's have a different intake elbow/silencer assembly?
oh okay on the tube size increase that makes sense to me, but i'm still rollin 2v 5.4 i don't think they switched to 3v till 03. speakin of 03 there is a all black fx4 supercrew 4x4 03 f150 with 84000 miles on it in a bank parkin lot in the town i work in for 12 grand, i am tryin to talk my wife into lettin me get it now.
ohh. excuse me. i thought you were someone else. maybe i should read a little more carefully before i post next time. you're right. you have a 2v and that should work fine with both the gotts intake and silencer removal. i've got a '98 with the 4.6 and i did both. on the stock tune, i didnt notice any change in noise when i removed the silencer, but now im running edge tunes while im waiting on my custom ones. there is a pretty bad whine or whistle now, its nothing like the "cool sound" it is supposed to make according to that article. but like i said, i only noticed it on the edge tunes, which are notorious for causing drone. if you dont like the noise without the silencer, you can always pick up another intake elbow from a junkyard. cost me $10 and now i can go back to stock anytime i want to.
so this works on the New body style Expeditions with the 2 valve 5.4
all with the 4.6 powered SUV's and trucks from '97 to present.
some of the '97 & '98 models need a newer air housing (the piece to the fender) adds another $10-$12 to the $12 people have averaged for the cost of this modification if they still want it 100% reversible

Heck man, I have an 04 black FX4 with 60k miles I'll sell you for 13.
Back to the Gotts intake. Thinking about doing this tomorrow. Kind of confused, but I think its b/c I haven't taken my intake off before.
Anyway, Let me know if I have this correct please.
I take off the original piece that goes into the fender.
Put piece of PVC pipe 1/2 into coupler. Connect with hose clamp.
Then jam the pvc pipe into fender hole.
Then connect other side of couple to rest of stock intake.
If this is correct, how long of a piece of pvc and coupler do I need? How far do I stick the pvc into fender, and how far do I stick pvc into coupler?
