6.8L Smoking

Hey guys,

A friend of mine has an 02' Excursion LTD V10 and it smokes like crazy for about 5 seconds only on a cold start up. The truck only has 70,000 miles on it and from what he tells me it has been well maintained and is completely stock. My first thought was that his piston rings may be gone but I would think it be smoking all the time especially under load? So what is the diagnosis from the rest of the forum?

Thanks

To my knowledge coolant or water has never been added unless done by the dealer during service. The engine starts normally and doesn't misfire.

Blue smoke: It may be a problem with the valve guide. Once you shut down they drip a bit more oil, causing the smoke during start up. Then it still drips down but a little enough amount that gets burned and barely any smoke (none to the eye) exits your pipe.

My buddy had his cats replaced at a muffler shop, they said they were clogged (seems odd to me with only 70,000mi) but the smoking on start up has stopped so all is well. Thanks for the help

There is a TSB from ford on that exact issue, dealing with converter replacement.
