Trading in the exploder for an Excursion-

My wife an I are looking to trade in her '03 explorer for a used Excursion... It seems that we are doing the opposite of everyone else- instead of downsizing, were going up. We are expanding our brood to 4, plus two Labs and all the gear that goes along with them. (We need the 4X4...2 miles unimproved back wood roads) It appears that there are alot of V-10's on the used truck lot (Duh) and the diesels are hard to find. There doesnt seem to be alot of 5.4's out there either. My question is, would I be satisfied with the power of the 5.4 (If I can find one) or is the V-10 something we can live with? We would only be doing about 9K miles a year (+-), and truth is the 4.6 in the explorer wasn't as frugal as one would think (about 13.5 MPG) which really sucks with the small tank. The Diesel isn't the answer either, as her average day is about 12 miles... The diesel wouldnt even be warm by then. Would you V10 owners do it again? would you/could you go down to the 5.4? Thanks,
BTW- The local stealership stated that the Excursion isn't dead.... still being made, although VERY limited numbers.....Just what I heard, anyway.

Excursion production ended on 30 September 2005. I have a 2004 Limited V10 4x4. I average about 14-15 on the highway and about 10-13 around town. It really depends on how judicious I am with the throttle! We looked at the diesel but deemed it not worth the extra 6k and didn't even consider the 5.4. I am very happy with the V10, plenty of power, however I would avoid the 5.4 at all costs if you are hauling 4 kids plus 2 dogs and 2 adults AND gear. Trust me you are going to wish you had the V10 or diesel. Remember, these are heavy trucks, over 7,000 lbs in 4x4 trim and keep in mind that the 5.4 4x4 is only about 100lbs less than that of the V10 4x4. With a 55 hp and 75lb of torque difference between both motors hauling about the same amount of weight, it's going to be taxing on the 5.4. Also the mileage difference isn't going to be much of a factor if at all. Good luck and let us know what you do. Avoid the 5.4!

Question

I am also interested in buying a Excursion as a third vec./travel vec. With gas prices they seem to be harder to sale and you can get a better price on a used one. I am looking at a 2002 with the V-10. Do you think there would be any difference in gas mileage between the 02 and the 04? My buddy said he heard they avg around 9 mpg. Thats alittle to steap for me.

I can't see where there would be any discernable (sp?) difference between the 2 in mileage as the motors are the same, no power difference. Any difference would come down to how the 02 was maintained. A healthy 02 should be just as good mileage-wise as an 04. Between city and highway I average about 12-13mpg. Good luck!

Thanks for the input... you actually answered an un-asked question as well- we also have a 6K travel trailer that we now pull w/ the Screw, and would also probably place it behind the Excursion.... so the 5.4 is history. Now we just have to see what we can find on the lots. Anyone got a white 04/05 with grey leather interior & V10 they wanna get rid of?

I personally do not have an extra Excursion to get rid of, however, I will tell you this. I think that the V-10 is a much better choice than the 5.4. The chassis and weight of the total vehicle require that you get a bigger motor and I would recommend the former rather than the latter engine. I think that the diesel would be way too expensive for you to operate for such short trips. so my recommendation to you is that you get the V-10. This is my opinion for what it is worth and you may take it or leave it. However, I wish you good luck and may God bless you and your family. I think that you will be happy with your choice.

Cheers

Well, just got back from the stealership, and we picked up an '02 limited excursion, white w/ tan leather interior w/ 50K on the clock. Traded in the '03 limited exploder, and all we had to give them was $1750.00. We ended up getting the V10. We'll post some picks once we get it all "purtied- up..."

Congrats.

It's late now, but I was going to add, you can't get a 4x4 with a 5.4. But that don't matter none now.

Excursion + V10 = AWESOME.

Definitely go for the V10. The 5.4 may be fitting for a truck or expy, but it won't do the Excursion any justice...

Good thread. I'm also looking for an Excursion. Probably a 2000-2001 with 75-80 k miles. I believe I'll go for the gas engine; I think in those model years they were all V-10 with maybe the very rare 5.4. I don't think the 5.4 does a very good job of pulling even my F-150 but that's a topic for another thread.

Can anyone give me some tips on what to check out on an Excursion of that vintage and mileage? This will be a third car just for family trips out to the farm, but of course I want to make sure I don't get a lemon.

Thanks for any tips.
