Just did an oil change on a 97 5.4L and the next day the engine started knocking. We used a K&N filter and Mobil 1 oil, with Lucas. Anyone ever hear of major valvetrain problems with the 5.4?

 

stay stock...frams and K&N's(lord i'm opening pandoras box here)will cause that knock..said to be the bypass valve opening and closing due to the constrictive nature of the filters....i will now sign off and read the flames in the morning thank you

 

We have some fire retardant around here somewhere. Just for my info...are the Motorcraft/purolator filters synthetic compatible?
The only reason I'm running K&N is because of the static burst strength and the stronger construction. Any info is appreciated...I've had a clattering for some time now.

are compatible with synthetics,as applicable to your type of vehicle....i also believe that they have redisigned the by pass valve and installed a silicon one especially for the synthetics.....man these fire suits get hot...LOL

 

Man I hate to start fanning them flames I'm not real familiar with oil additives, but I think that Lucas is some thick stuff you may have changed the viscosity of your motor oil by adding that Lucas todays engines run much tighter clearances and require lighter oil to adequately lubricate.

I also agree with TexfordD some filters do have a check ball but it was my understanding that the check ball was in place to prevent a backflow of oil on some engines when the engine is shut off. the check ball prevents some engines from a dry start.

Let me turn the back of my truck around and we'll use the H20 from the tail pipes to cool down.
