Is there an easy way to get the starter out? My 98 won't turn over, Battery checked out, but no life from the starter. Thanks in advance

yea, most likely cause is the SOLENOID (sorry, had to be a ****).

take a screw driver and stick it on the starter on the bolts where the black wire and red wire are connected. if the truck turns over then youve discovered your problem.

if nothing happens then you need a new starter.

Haven't tried that yet, I'm getting snow in my "garage". I read that there is a relay on the firewall under the battery cover, is this a problem area also if there is one? I was trying to get a socket on the bolts and I couldn't get any ones I have on hand on the bolts. Go figure.

Just changed mine out a few weeks ago. The easiest way is to remove the passanger side tire so you can access 2 of the bolts pretty easily. There will be one bolt at the 12 o'clock position and one bolt at the 9 o'oclock position.
The last one I remove is from the bottom of the starter.
You will need at least a 6'' + 3" extensions to get easy access to the bolt's in the 9 & 12 o'clock position's.
Complete job is about 2 hours, lifting truck, removing tire, removing starter, installing new starter, tire on, lowering truck, cleaning tools, throwing the junk starter in the neighbor's lawn, and driving again.
Unless you run into a problem, not a bad job, really.
I do not recommend a rebuilt starter. A new starter for a decent name brand is usually only an extra $20.00.

Good Luck with it.

ps: you need to use metric sockets !

It's not under a battery cover, it's under your starter relay/fuse cover.
You may want to check for voltage on the 2 main RED lines with ignition key on/forward. Check on both sides of the mega fuses and at your starter relay.
The starter relay is positioned to the left of the mega fuses. If your lucky, Jbrew will read this and post pic's for you. He just had to for another member last week. If you do a search or go to Jbrews photo album's, you will find the pic's there.

I didn't say I was going to show you what is under the hood, just the fenderliners .
Yep, she went car shopping a couple years ago and fell in love with the Toyota, Scion TC. In other words, the driving fish bowl. That car has more glass in it than any car (out of the factory) that I have ever seen. The entire top of the car from bottom of the windshield to the bottom of the rear window is all glass, and of course all the metal supports. Great car except I am 5'11" and there is no head room.

Before you remove the starter check the cables going to the starter for corrosion. Theses trucks are known for corrosion wicking up the wire and causing a problem. Specially at the starter end.
