Normal Engine Temperature...

Does anyone know what the "normal" operating temperature on a 5.4 is?

Thanx.

I don't know if you're looking for the actual temperature or not, but my temp gauge never seems to go past the very middle....and that's been in 90+ outside temp at 80MPH on the freeway with the AC cranked up.

If the word "NORMAL" was printed on the gauge then it will sit right around "R"....

But, since they don't even have the word printed there anymore, it'll sit slightly under half way up.....

Once the gauge reaches it's "normal" position, it won't move or change at all with slight temp increases..... I don't think the stock gauge will move until it's over 230*??

My aftermarket temp gauge will ususally run between 190* and 195* for the most part. I've gotten it to go to 210* pulling a long grade towing my travel trailer in 90* weather... Stock gauge sat in the same spot it does when it's 30* weather.....

ditto what he said the stock gauge is more or less just an idiot light sand dragging up huge dunes i have got as hot as 230 and the stock gauge never moved from its normal position, and i run at 180 degrees normaly the gauge just stays in the same spot

Most of the F150's don't have a water temp sending unit, they actualy use the cylander head temp sending unit. when you datta log this out put it will be very close to the coolent temp eventhough it is slower reacting but normaly this temp will be in the 195 to 210 degree range which is the ideal temp for proper operation and max performance. The guage has so little travel at this range, but does move. I have Troyer Electric fans and if I raise the turn on temp I can see movement in the guage and if you sit and watch the guage at idle you can watch it rise and fall when the fan cycles off and on.

I've noticed that a lot of the guages are "dummy" guages. I'v been wanting to install some aftermarket guages for some time, but I've been a little hesitant about going to it. I want the stock guages to stay where they are and still work and intall a pod with volt, temp, and oil press. Anyone done it already and can give some pointers?

When I run Auto Tap the coolant temp hangs right around 210 on my 4.6.

Ideal Temperature

I have read that the Ideal Temperature for the 5.4 is 205 degrees. Trucks perform best around this temp and I dont recall where I read it.

All good news. I was worried mine was running higher than normal.

I recently found out about the "tripometer reset button during startup" feature and have been monitoring the engine temperature for a while now.

During normal driving, to the store or to and from work, passing vehicles here and there, never going over 70mph, I'm running an average temperature of about 94 celcius, which is 201.2 fahrenheit. I have yet to see the indicator go over 96.

It will be interesting to see what I run when I hook up to my trailer this weekend.

I'll let ya know.
