Let's see...just my luck.....
Heading out for spring break in less than 24 hours. Gear shifter mysteriously has "shifted" over one notch. (R=Park, N=Reverse, D=Neutral, 2=Drive, etc...)
it was working fine just kinda weird with that goin on.
BUT now i go to start and it won't turn, click, do anything. Maybe it thinks that i am not in park. The ford dealer obviously can't do anything by tomorrow. It won't start in Drive(neutral) or Reverse(Park).
Hoping some of ya'll could have some really good suggestions to get this fixed.
ahhh

If your shift cable isn't broken, then check the connection where the cable meets the shift lever on your tranny. It's an adjustable plastic connection, possibly the teeth are stripped or the clip is gone.
You have to get under and inspect the shifter adjustment linkage. There are plastic parts involved.
The neutral safty switch is now out of position is why you can't start the engine.
This is the way it's supposed to work. Can't start the engine in any position but Park and neutral.
It it is out of position from a fault then this is the result.

I agree, It is definately not depressing the park nuetral switch. Try starting the truck by turning the key on with it in nuetral (real nuetral ) and slowly move the shifter with the key engaged towards the indicator nuetral. You may find a sweet spot to get the truck started temperarally.
If memory serves me right the P/N switch is on the drivers side of the bell housing, under the truck, about where the front of your drivers seat will be. Have a friend move the gear shift from park to engaged with the park break on and see if plastic adjustment bracket or the retaining clip has broken. If it moves ( the insert and the outer cable sheathing) when you engage and disengage the gear try and see if you can tie-wrap or hose clamp it in place until you can fix it right. You may even be able to depress the park/neutral switch and drive it as is but I have had a bad experence doing that ....If it looks solid you may simply have to adjust it, its not hard.

appreciate it
that has to be it.
I didn't check under the car yet, but i went to go start and it fired right up. It has to be like you were saying a "sweet spot" for now to get it started.
