changing plug?

changing plug?

have a rough idle and am going to try and change the plugs. just wanted to ask what materials i will need to change my plugs in my 97' 4.6 4x4. and is there anything i should be aware of before i try and tackle this job. also if there are any suggestions to what kind of plugs and wires i need to install (performance wise would like the best).

-i only have 50k on the truck but i figured with it being 6 years old its probably time.

I have 75,500 and am still on my 1st plugs from the factory (runs fine).
use oem plugs and wires they worked for 50 thousand+ right.

Be carefull not to cross thread the plugs when installing them or you will cross thread the sockets and that gets real expensive. Also do not over torque them i would just hand tighten and then a 1/4 turn with the ratchet. Its not a simple job to change the plugs so be perpared to bend and twist yourself in many directions to get them out and be careful. Do a search on here and you will find a wealth of infomation on plug changes and performance products. Let us know how you make out.

Motorcraft plug # AWSF 32PP gapped @.054
Also,ide use factory wires.Dont forget the dielectric grease.About the antiseize on the threads,ive heard mixed opinions.Thats your call.Go to the "technical articles" and there should be a how-to on the plug install.Good luck and keep us posted!

seems to me with only 3 threads holding the plug you would want stickem not anti sieze on a plug.

I myself think blue locktite just might be the safest along with plenty of torque.

a little anti seize on the plug threads and dielectric for the plug tops. tighten not much more than finger tight--i think it is 13 foot pounds or there abouts. for both plugs and plug wires, my vote is definitely for motorcraft double platinum plugs and motorcraft wires. Cost more but well worth it. IMO. I like to pull the front tires to get the truck low to the ground. Makes for easier installation. Use a piece of rubber vacuum hose to start the plugs by hand---this reduces chance for cross threading. If you have access to compressed air (or use a shop vac), blow out around the plug holes before you pull the plug. plugs closest to the firewall can be a bear. use a combination of the socket, then a 4 inch straight extension, then a a swivel, and then more extensions in that order for the plugs closest to the firewall.
