Odd short or glitch I cant not seem to track down...

New to group, Have a 2001 Ford F150 Lariat
I bought the truck for a good price & is the first F150 I have ever owned ( former chevy nut)
1st problem I ran into was it blew #4 spark plug clean out of the head. Found out this is common with the 5.4 triton Bought the repair kit for it & everything was sunshine & rainbows again. Until last week..
Got in the truck & went to roll the windows down, & Nothing.. figured I blew a fuse, nope, fuse is good. Also noticed the dome light was no longer coming on.
after some research, discovered that the GEM in this truck is famous for going bad. Also was told to change the battery save relay. I changed the relay first as it was cheaper & Far easier to do. No luck, so went & got a used GEM & changed that out ( thankfully I dont live close to a church, because I would be going straight to hell for the cussing I used getting that damn thing out) GEM in place, turned on key, still no dome light, & windows still dont work.
Couple questions. 1st, does the GEM box have to be programmed after installed?
( GEM Box came out of the same year model & type of F150, Numbers matched part wise)
2nd, if does not have to be reprogrammed, what should i look at next?

Thanks in advance!
Starting to wish I stayed with Chevrolet

Hi Obnoxious1, welcome to the forum. I think what you are experiencing is a wiring fault that has been discussed in this forum before. It's on the driver's side and is caused by repeated stress on the wiring into the door as I recall. Probably, a wire has broken, I doubt if it's a short.

I just did a quick search in our How-To section and found this: https://www.f150online.com/forums/ar...door-wire.html I think it MAY help you.

There are also some threads in the Electrical section about wiring problems to the door that may help you too. They are several years old, so you may have to look for a bit.

Dumb question time from me.

1. Is it all windows do not work, or just the driver's side ?

2. Do any of the windows work using the switch on that door ?
- Remember to have the power window lock off when checking.

3. Do the power mirrors work ?

4. Do the power door locks work ?

5. Did you check for + VDC at the power window switch with the key in the run or assy position ?

6. Does everything else work correctly ?
- EG: Radio, HVAC. This is aside from the list you made note of above.

7. Is your F150 a 4x2 or 4x4 ?
- Does it work ?

8. Did you check the Battery Saver relay was installed correctly ?

If you pulled a GEM that is the same as your truck, you are good to go.
The GEM needed to be from a truck with the same options ( PW, PDL, 4x2 or 4x4 etc )

I would still check the route that Jack suggested; looking for a broken wire ( or two ) in the rubber boot from the door to a -pillar.

None of the windows work, Power mirrors also do not work, but didnt work when i bought the truck, Power locks kinda work. Truck is 2 wheel drive, Numbers matched on GEM. Only thing I have noticed since the start of this mess, is dome light no longer comes on & Theft light stays on on dash now.
Going to try the door harness in a day or 2, been down in my back all week & havent been able to do it yet

1. What does Power locks kinda work mean ?

2. The GEM you got, what features did it have ?
- Not do the numbers match, was it feature for feature the same truck as your truck ?

3. When does the Theft light stay on ?

4. Does everything else work correctly ?
- EG: Radio, HVAC. This is aside from the list you made note of above.

Power locks, you can hear the motor work, It will lock, but not unlock.
GEM I installed was exact match ( feature for feature ) to old GEM box.
Theft light stays on until I pull key out of ignition.
Everything else seems to work fine except the dome light wont come on .
Going to try to look at wiring harness on the door this weekend, Hopefully will find something. Not being able to roll the windows down is driving me crazy.

Any chance anyone has or has a link to a wiring diagram for the drivers door on this vehicle?

Wiring diagrams are organized by logical/functional groups, not by physical location within the vehicle.

ok, have traced some wires down. None of the wires in the door are shorted, or broken, they all ohm out fine.
But, the hot wire for the window switch is now somehow grounded. & cant seem to find the culprit. looks like im gonna have to take it to ford & make them rich :/
