Exclamation Reverse Light Problem

It's an '04 SuperCrew.

The problem is, when I shift into reverse the lights sometimes turn on and sometimes they don't.

What I normally do to get the reverse lights to turn on is put the truck in Park and then go to Reverse because if I go from Drive to Reverse it rarely works.

This isn't a really big problem but now that I installed a back-up camera, (I had to 'tap' into the reverse light cable in order to 'trigger' the camera) sometimes the camera turns on and sometimes it doesn't.

I noticed this happening a long time ago but it didn't really concern me until now that it's messing with my camera and I didn't really consider this problem when shopping for a back-up camera.

Any input on what might be causing this 'faulty' reverse light issue would be greatly appreciated.

Probably a worn or misaligned DTR sensor.

Could also be something in the shift linkage that's causing too much "slop" in there and resulting in imprecise DTR switch input from the shifter cable.

Thanks for your reply!

My DTR Sensor is pretty "gunky" so I'm going to try and take it off and clean it.

How would I know if my DTR Sensor is worn out?

Process of elimination.

Eliminate everything external I mentioned, and, if it still isn't working right, then the switch is likely failing internally.

Fixed!

The shift linkage was okay, so was the bushing.

Picked up a DTR sensor (neutral safety switch) for $10 and it seems to be working like it should now!

Maybe the old DTR was worn out or wasn't making good contact or something I don't know.

Thank you @projectSHO89
