Alternator discussion for the enthusiast

Hey fella's how is everything?

I think I done pushed my charging system to its limit. I have the big "4" wire upgrade, Fresh red top under the hood powering my truck.

But I also have a sound system with a 600 watt 4 channel amp powering my door speakers, and a mono block powering 2 12" ported subs. I forget the power rating of the sub stage but I feel like it is time to upgrade my alternator. I do plan on adding some accent and offroad lighting on my truck so I really do want to get the best bang for my buck. Where should I start looking? Will a 220 amp will suffice my wants/needs or should I look for a 270?

For those guys who know what I should look for please share, I'm all ears!

Thanks guys

Hey Bro I'm in the same boat. I've upgraded to 4 gauge on the big 4. I have been looking at two different alternators, power hungry bastards and a mechman.

I'm probably gonna go with the mechman. Higher output and if you have the money you can get a variable charge rate with adjustment in the cab for when you need the extra voltage. From what I have read they are a custom built unit made to handle extreme output. Beefed up larger bearings and stuff. Most others just tweek a OEM unit. Hope the info helps.

I have been leaning towards the mechman unit myself. DC power has an amazing unit for a little over $6 large bills but I don't want to spend all that.

Now for example, say I went ahead and purchased the mechman unit, will I need a new belt? Crank pulley? Under hood the belt is still stock as well as the pulleys. Truck has 63,000 trouble free miles

As far as I know it fits like OE Some place's just put a overdrive pulley on and call it high output.
