Hey gang. Frequent reader, recent (in few minutes ago - a n00b to the forums) member and owner of a 2006 F-150 with the same problem on the odometer flashing/quit working. Cracked solder joints, eh? Thanks, Greg! I'll be working on this, tomorrow.

Geoff,

If you have any luck with your '06 let me know please let me know. I have an '05 and the design is a little different. It was easy to get the cluster out but after that I was lost.

Thanks,
Steve

I think it's going to be a matter of finding another device in a junk yard, and unsoldering the old one, and soldering in the new one (or, simply resoldering the current one)

either way, since I use this truck for Hot-shot delivery in/around Houston (and wherever else they send me) the longer I keep the truck down, the less money I make.

On the flip side, not knowing the mileage kinda keeps me from making determinations on how many miles there have been racked up since the last oil change, and other maintenance worries. Currently, i'm 'guess-ti-mating' how long it's been.

MY opinion is, since Oil is the Lifeblood of -any- engine, you can't change it too often.

Speaking from experience... my 4.0L V-6 in a 1991 Ranger lasted me 387,500+ miles, until the passenger side head decided to start leaking water :-(

Has anyone attempted this repair on a 2005 or similar. My instrument cluster looks completely different from the 99s when you pull it out. It doesn't appear to come apart in the same way. Can anyone offer some advice?

This is a great fix. Have suffered with this issue for years. Only took about 10 minutes (mostly letting the iron heat up) to repair as I was already installing a heater core.

Followed the deinstallation instructions from origional post. Found bad light bulb. replaced it and check all solder joints. There ok. Reinstalled it and Fuel, volts, and oil pressure all at mid scale. I just filled the tank prior to this and it should read full. Is there some thing that needs to be reset?

2005 F150 Odometer Problem

I have read many GREAT threads on this forum and all very informative. My question is I have read on resoldering the odometer on the F150 up to the year 2003 but have not seen much if anything on the 2005 year. My odometer is acting up just like the rest of the posters. I have removed the odometer cluster and followed one of the post on here and the cluster looks different, new model probably. There is no ribbon cable to remove and not sure how to remove the circuit board from the cluster. does anyone have any info on the 2005? any pictures? Is the soldering fix the same with the contacts to be resoldered on the back side? I do see some soldering joints on the front side after removing the thin plasic covering but again not sure.
Thanks

My old '99 standard cab has had this problem for some time. I'd asked dealers about it, and they'd just shrug and quote me $$$ to replace the cluster! No, thanks....

Recently, it was time for my state safety inspection. I'd noticed the "Service Engine Soon" light wasn't working, and figured it was probably just a burned out bulb, since my OBDII scanner didn't show any problems. Reluctantly, I decided I had to take the cluster out and replace the bulb. Since I was going to be there anyway, I figured I'd check out the odometer problem too.

Sure enough, that same pin was cold-soldered! Once the cluster is out, it's an easy fix, and it works fine now. Greg, your excellent post is still helping people!

Now, why don't the dealers know about this? Or - maybe they do, but don't want to tell anyone?

Greg for President !!!

2000 Lariat 4x4 ex-cab 97000 miles

With out a doubt, that repair is the best one going.
Ford missed the boat on that one. $400.00 for a new board they could have gotten 200 on a repair in a New york second.

As for the mod;
I read it about a couple months ago. decided to do it this past Friday, 4 23 10 took 3 hours, wife called me in the middle of repair for supper. The instructions were perfect, on the money.
Just take your time, and save save the moo-laa........

I am so happy having the odometer working full time

Thanks Craig

2006 or Newer Solution

Instrument panel is different for the newer F-150 models. Has anyone fixed a newer model? Any advise? Thanks.

This has to be one of the oldest active threads in all internetdom.
I just registered to thank Greg, girlwithtruck and others who contributed. Did the fix on Friday and all seems well. The trick with the headlight switch is beyond cool.

The hardest part for me was getting the darn connectors off of the back of the cluster. I snapped one of the little latches but it doesn't seem to be of great consequence.

As an added bonus, my cluster is now clean. There was a little hunk of dried grass or something that was bugging me.

I purchased a '99 F150 XLT Supercab a few weeks ago and stumbled upon this great site.

Like Gen. Macarthur, I shall return.
