Guys,
It seems that my truck intermittently gets stuck in park. Unless I shove the brake right to the floor for a couple of seconds, then you can feel the interlock release. Also, the touch release on the brake will not shut off the cruise control. I assume there is a fault with the switch on the brake pedal but it seems funny that it doesn't do it all the time.
Does anyone know anything about this and have a diagram or picture of where this switch is? I can't seem to find any reference to in in my shop manual.
Thanks
m

This actually sounds like the brake switch is causing the problem, due to the addition of the CC not shutting off.
The shift interlock on the steering wheel column for the steering wheel shift versions.
If you have the FX4 -Lux model, the interlock is in the console for the floor shifter.
Yup, I'd suspect the brake light switch here too. All signs point to it don't they?
Get someone to stand behind you and tell you when you get brake lights as you gradually apply pressure to the brake pedal. They should come on right away - before there is any appreciable movement or pressure. Have the engine running when you do this, but the transmission can be in park.
Thank you all. I have noticed on some of the posts there is talk about both a brake pressure switch on the master cylinder and a switch somewhere on the brake pedal assembly. Which one does what?
The 2004 ( excluding '04 Heritage & L ) to 2008 do not have the secondary safety switch on the master cylinder. non applicable to your problem.
The switch on the pedal is what turns the brake lamps on / off, which activates the shift interlock and will turn off the CC.
The accelerator is no longer attached to the throttle body on '04+ MY trucks ( exclude Heritage & L ) via a cable with the CC also attached. All throttle by wire now.
Is replacing the brake pedal switch a do-it-yourself deal? I can't even see it. Does anyone have a diagram or a picture of it perhaps?
How did you miss it ?
It is on the brake pedal arm, big black switch with 4 wires out of it on a connector. Mine has a bright yellow c-clip housing on it.
You should see a light green, light green w/ red stripe, pink w/ light green and a tan w/ red stripe wires on it.
- Tan w/ red stripe & pink w/ light green stripe go to the shift interlock
- light green w/ red stripe & light green go to the PCM for the BOO functions & to the CHMSL directly and to the MFS for the turn / stop lamp functions.
What shop manual are you using ?
Just want to know, as it is junk if you cannot find a reference for the brake pedal position switch or the shift interlock switch.

Reason: spelling is not why I got the job
I had a similar problem recently except my cruise control would not come on instead. Sometime the shifter and the cruise control would work just fine and other time it would not. I believe my problem was a loose connection on the brake switch. Like SSCULLY said it is big black switch with 4 wires out of it on a connector and a bright yellow c-clip housing on it. When I finally found it and put my hand on I move it all around and made sure all the connection where good and my truck works fine now. If your problem happens all the time you might need to change the switch itself

SSCULLY is correct on the price info.
You would save money by purchasing from a dealer, because the tax rate won't
equivilate to $17.00

Thanks for looking up the real PN for it.
When ordered from a site using the Trademotion interface, the PN is not listed on the order, but the shipping list has them on it ( normal dealer parts bill ).
It is the little switch on the brake assembly. I had the same problem, got the new switch from ford dealer for about 20 bucks and had it fixed in 5 minutes.
Guys;
I finally got around to changing the brake pedal switch and all is good again.
Not easy for a bigger guy to get at but do-able. Thanks to everyone for thier help and a special thanks to the super-experts who are always on here posting thier help. Great website!
