I believe it is for the 4x4 switch.

For us 4x2'ers... has anyone installed any sort of aftermarket accessory in place of the (useless) coin holder?

I was wondering the same thing. I was thinking about changing it out to a push button start kit as shown here.

But we would need to find a way to mount it.

If you have 4x4 but have the coin holder can you put the 4x4 switch in or is there more that needs to be done?

If you have a 4x4 you should have the "Shift on the Fly" rotary switch there. I have the 2WD model, but I am fairly certain that all 4x4's have the switch and not the coin holder.

Not all, my XLT has the coin holder. I think only FX4s and above have the electronic switch there (at least in 2005)

Nice

Nice. What wires did you use to wire it up? and where did you get the black trim piece around it?
