How do you tell if an aftermarket tach is Digital or Analog?

My cousin told me not to install my aftermarket tach because he thinks it is an analog one and if I hook it up to pin 48 on the computer then it will dead short it and fry the computer. Is this true? How do I tell if the tach is D or A?

An analog tach has a needle, a digital has a digital display.

The input to either tach has to be the same signal. I can't think of any reason that your cousin might be correct.

I assume he is refering to the input signal being an analog electrical signal or digital (not the read out). That being said, I don't know how to tell...
