Jim, you're right. He did not make any "firmness" changes. I just wanted him to know that too much of anything is not necessarily a good thing, in case he does. I probably didn't explain this well. *headslap*

The canned tunes ARE "safe". Bill is somewhat "conservative" in these settings, since there's no telling how they're going to be (mis)used.

im sorry if there was a misunderstanding , i did not change anything under custom settings. i just put it on level 2, 87 tow and thats it. i just thought that the firmer shifts would be stressful on the tranny. thats why i asked. idk if your trucks acted the same way on this canned tune. but i aint gonna start messing up the settings. the only thing i am going to check up on is the tires size. i have went acording to the php booklet provided with the gryphon, and used the equation to find out my tires circumference in millimeters. i have an 18" rim on with a 275/65r15 tire size. if you have the time and want to double check, i came up with 2482 millimeters.

I just responded in your other thread, but I didn't mention anything about the number you came up with. 2482 is correct for that size tire with a 3% squish factor. That's probably a good place to at least start with.

First, if these are OEM tires and wheels, you don't need to adjust your Tire Size (TS) at all. The correct values will be taken from the Vehicle ID (VID) section of your PCM. And, if your tires are NOT OEM, but you told Bill what size you have, he will have included that in your tune. But if you OPEN the Custom Options menu, the correct value will be ignored and a completely bogus value will be loaded unless you change it to a correct value.

The number 2482 was called a "starting point" because your tires may have a bit more or less "squish", depending on their construction and your inflation pressures. You simply may have to "play" with this number a bit to get the displayed speed correct. Use a GPS, if you have one and get the speed shown on the Gryphon to match the GPS.

But again, as long as you completely bypass the Custom Options step, the speed should be fine.

ok, i did have to lower the # down from 2482 to get the correct reading on the speedometer. i lowered it down 30 counts to 2452 and it helped out alot. i am 1 mph off.

jack, on wot, coming out of 1st gear, i noticed right before it shifts, it feels kinda weird. hard to explain. like the truck would jerk twice before shifting into 2nd. i dont know if thats normal or not. i know its not the rev cuz i looked at my record and top rev was 5380(in that ballpark). i dont know if it has to do with the wot shifting? (at normal shifting its fine) or could it be the shift firmness... again im a little frantic b.c this is my 1st time using a programmer but day by day i am getting to know more about it. so please excuse me for the excessive questions.

I don't know that I've ever felt that kind of shift, but then I don't really use WOT unless I'm trying to pass someone quickly and then it only downshifts to 2nd. I wonder if your Torque Converter is locking just before the shift? I've seen it do that on my truck under load in second and then the upshift to 3rd is quite hard. If you monitor "Comm Gear", you could find out. If the TC is locked, you'll see a little padlock symbol next to the current gear being used.

But again though, I would not worry about damaging your transmission as long as you don't make a habit of driving your truck like a drag racer. That kind of treatment WILL shorten its service life!

i will try that, monitor "comm Gear". but this is off the start, 1st gear about to shift into second..kinda weird, maybe the custom tunes will take care of it? (im hoping). so right before it shifts, the tc should unlock? right?

You may have the same shifting issues that I had with the canned tunes on my Gryphon and my Xcal3. Both programmers made my truck shift so hard that I could not use them unless I had custom tunes loaded -- it felt like my truck was going to fall apart every time it shifted. I got in touch with Bill and once he finished my custom tunes it was perfect. Just a thought.......
