Question superchip question?

When installing a chip is there anything that has to be done to the computer as far as reprograming it or is it as simple as just plugging it in and your done? Plus my tranny is a dog shifting from 1st to 2nd, will this chip make a big difference with this? Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Hi bthornto,

Excellent questions!

The link that DuckHntr provided will give you a good idea of the installation process.

The Superchip is a sealed module, with a female data slot on the back of it, that simply mates to the male connector on the back of the Ford computer. So once you clean that connector, you just plug the Superchip in, put the computer back into the vehicle and go, basically.

With regards to your upshift characteristics, you will *love* how the Superchip changes that. Ford uses a shift delay to deliberately elongate and soften the upshift, as part of their soft-shift strategy. They also reduce engine power quite noticeably during and just after the upshift, and these 2 combined is why it takes so long to upshift, and why the truck "noses over" going into second gear, and takes a second or two before it starts pulling hard again. Both of these are changed, so that there is no more delay in the upshift, and no reduction of engine power during and after the upshift anymore. That alone is going to make a noticeable difference. We also increase the line pressure to give a bit firmer shift feel.

We then take a look at driveability aspects, and do things like remove the downshift delays, and the transitional spark retards used in numerous places in the factory program.

The end result is more power of course, and much improved driveability and shift characteristics.

Please feel free to give us a call if you like, and we'll be happy to go over all the details about the Superchip with you, and answer any questions you may have.
