severe scratches, down to the metal

this truck has really been a project for me. ive rebuilt the rear fenders and working on all the other rust on the cab, and now i have these new additions to the list...scratches, some straight to the metal. BTW the truck is very dirty in those pictures, so just the big scratches are the issues, the others come out with wax.

Repaint. Where are the scratches? Some people are using the color matched Line-X Xtra instead of paintin rocker panels or bumpers.

i figured, thats what i was trying to avoide though. all are on the bed.
im about 45 min north of detroit in the oxford area...leonard to be specific, but most dont know where that is. middle of nowhere lol

That's gonna be a repaint. Even if you used some touch-up paint, it won't match.

On or in the bed?

If in, line-x it. If not, learn to live with them. It gives character to older trucks, kinda like battle scars.

I grew up in the Troy/Bloomfield area.

x2. If you can catch your fingernail in it all you can do is repaint it. You cant match touch up, and that obviously wont buff out. I work at a paint and body shop and we get that all the time. Even if someone keys your truck down the bedside, you have to sand the clear and the scratch. Then fix the scratch depending on how deep maybe with spot putty. After you get all that smoothed out you have to spray the paint and blend into what is already painted and then re-clear the whole bed side. Deep scratches can be major pains. If you want it fixed right, and to look good. You have to get it repainted.

you work at a body shop? so could you tell me how much id be looking at to repaint the bed?

I wish that I could give you an exact price. If there isnt much body work im sure you could get it done for a couple hundred. It really depends on all the damage is done on just one side. It will be cheaper if only one side needs to be fixed. Good thing about it is that you shouldnt need much paint to cover, and it doesnt look like alot of body work so because its nothing major it shouldnt be too bad. I would do what mjb1032 suggested. Also, try to see if you can take it to a couple body shops to get estimates on what it would cost. Try a couple different ones to make sure you dont get screwed on the price.

alright thanks for the advice. i took it to just a little collision repair shop in town, and because the fenders were rusted out and i bondoed them, the guy there said he couldnt paint it because the fenders were "too far gone?" i have no idea what he meant by that. ill just take it somewhere else.

Are you saying that the bedsides are rusted out? Because if that be the case you can find someone to paint it for and just make it look okay. Or if its bad enough you might have to get a bedside replaced, which can be kinda expensive. But if you can weld and grind then you might be able to buy a new bedside and put it on yourself. Although it wouldnt be painted. But getting it painted will be no big deal at that point. Rust is no fun.

If it's in that bad shape, I'd fix it and prep it the best you can, then take it to Maaco and get a cheap paint job on the whole truck.

noo there is only a tiny tiny surface rust spot by the gas tank. the fenders were all rusted out but i grinded all the rust out and bondoed over it. the paint on the truck is in really good shape, theres just a lot of deep scatches on the bed

I hate to say it but most body shops wont touch a vehicle if you have already done prep work. I asked when I had my 87 Chevy repainted and the guy flat out told me if I do any prep that I should take it some where else.
