Harper government...what do you think?

What the deal about this government that they are now behind the liberals in the polls? I don't get it. They seem to take a more common sense approach to the issues compared to the past governments on things like crime, gun laws, and the environment. They are actually getting something done which is a change, even with a minority government.

Ok, although I do admit that the income trust legislation has hurt me personnally, it probably was the right thing to do with some of the huge tax paying companies looking to switch to an income trust (like Encana, Telus, Bell etc). Aside from this, I think they are doing alot of good things. They are publicly supporting our troops in Afghanistan, as opposed to the seemingly back door support they used to get from the Liberals.
This whole environmental issue with Minister Ambrose is kind of rediculous. We look real bad in the world because of the big promise/no action plan of Chretien with regards to Kyoto. I think she is on the right track with getting together a nationwide plan and actually enforcing emissions laws we already have, then imposing stronger emissions limits that are achievable while working with industry. The whole Kyoto carbon credits trading seems to be a waste of our money, why punish the industrialized countries that do have emissions control by forcing us to subsidize the emerging economies which do not (like India).
Rant over, so whats bugging everyone else today

Carbon Credits ! ?

While I don't full understand the carbon credit issues, I'll bet that if the Europeans were not dealing in the so called carbon credits cover there emmissions they would be just as bad pollutters as the rest of the industrialized west. If Canada would count all the Federal and Provincial crown forested areas as carbon sinks we might have no polution in this country!

Anytime the Liberals aren't in power is a good for Canada. It's refreshing to have a government that is more interested in fixing the problems instead of trying to come up with new ways to steal our hard earned cash. The income trust legislation was brought in to close a loophole that was allowing corporations to hide millions of dollars and avoid paying taxes. They can no longer do that. What's interesting to me is that the opposition parties raise holy hell when Harper is trying to do something right, but they did nothing to block the income trust legislation. Then they go to the media and say the Conservatives broke a promise. This is something the Liberals never would have done, it would have cost them millions in funding from these same corporations.

Obviously the Conservatives aren't concerned about that, they appear to be more interested in doing the right thing for Canada as a whole.

Harper

You guys are right on! I thought this was a truck site but whenever I hear political views like this, I have hope. The Liberals are ahead in the polls but I don't think they can turn that into a government. Picture this; election day, you are going to mark your ballot.....dysfunction or functional? The Liberals put themselves first and the country second. It is all about getting/staying in power with your tax dollars.

Looks like this is an East/West thing - west likes the conservative gov and the changes being made, the East is afraid of these changes. I feel the liberals should have been out a loooong time ago.

definately an east-west thing. i think it was in 2000 or maybe 2003 that chretein didn't even go to calgary or west of calgary on his bloody campaing tour, then the liberals wonder why the west thinks they're idiots.

Now, if only i could get the rest of the rediculously left-wing idiots out here in bc to vote conservative... we might actually see progress in canada!!!

My one beef with the conservatives is the whole re-hashing of the gay marriage...NO ONE CARES. i couldn't care less about queers marrying, and i think the fact that they're bringing it up again might hurt them in liberal-minded views. other than that i like the current idiot tank we have now, much improved from the last decade-plus idiot tank we had.

cheers

I am glad the gay marriage issue is dead, like you said, who cares, a free vote in the house and it was defeated to reopen the issue. It was an election promise that Harper made to have a free vote on it. They did, promise kept, issue over. Now back to real issues like Afghanistan, tax reform, transfer payments, fiscal imbalance, and getting rid of the 'waste of tax dollars' long gun registry.

Cabinet shuffle. Looks like a Spring 2008 election in the works. Bloc going to call for a vote on non-confidence on our troops in Afaganastan.

Looks like the Harper Gov't days are limited

What your seeing is the development of a very smart move by the Harper government. Shuffle things around then call an election before the Liberals are ready to take up the fight at the polls.

BTW how the hell does the Bloc get away with having seats in the Commons without being a national party? They're a provincial party that gets national recognition in the house. Only in Canada!

I agree with you 100%. I think its about time that we changed how to form a Federal Party in Canada.

I think that if the Bloc want to run as a Federal Party or any new party for that matter should run at least 1 candidate in 50% of the ridings available in every province and territory in Canada. Eg. If Ontario has say 150 ridings, the new party MUST run at the very least 75 candidates in that province. Failure to do this would result in not being allowed to form a Federal party in Canada and no funding in Parliament.

Lets face it, the sole purpose of the PQ party is to break up Canada. It would cost them a small fortune to run candidates in all of the ridings in Canada. I am considering writing to my MP to suggest this change. How do you guys feel about this?

their constituents care.

Remember that the Conservatives are grass-roots based. Meaning every member gets a vote. Not like the Liberlas that are run by a few elite members.

The Conservatives are doing exactly what voters asked them to do.

And the numbers are also telling. If left to an open referendum vote, there is a chance the Canadian populace would make it illegal. THAT is why Paul Martin never let it be an open vote in the Commons. He knew he could lose.

So now it's up to the NDP to either bring down the government or allow the Conservatives to continue. The Liberals under Stephan Dion are expected to vote against the budget, leaving it up to Layton and his big top circus to either support Harper or vote against him. Projections are an election in the next 6-8 months. This time I hope Harper gets his majority so he can start to make some real changes that are long overdue.

I dunno about you other canucks, but politically i am sick of quebec. all of the little extra perks they get just for staying part of canada, all of the funding, the guaranteed seat numbers in the house and senate, the fact that they are the exception to what seems like every rule or law in canada, and then to cap it all off, they run a provincial party in the H of C who's sole purpose is to break up canada. awesome.

this is not to say that i hate quebeckers, all of them that i have dealt with or known have been nice folks, but i am politically sick of hearing about quebec.

My .02, flame on if you're gonna.

Tanner
