SS number required?

Does anyone know if your social security number is required when buying a new truck?

When I bought my wife's truck 4 years ago this asked for this. I was paying cash to them.

Like TexfordD stated they need it when paying cash over $10,000 and they need it if you going to be financing it, so basically no way out of using it.

I dont think you have to give your SS# if you are paying cash via a cashiers check because it's already been run through a bank.

Don't give your SS# out if you don't want them to run your credit report which will put a ding on your FICO score.

Same thing goes for the Doctor or Dentist if you are paying cash on delivery of services.

There was a dealer in NJ (Autoland) that the salesmen would take a customer's SS# and open up credit cards with it. Happened to a bunch of people and eventually the salesmen got arrested.
