Brake Pad Hardness ???

I was at the Ford Dealer today and asked about which type of pads to use,(F-150 2006 4x4) I thought the factory OEM pads were soft and made the dust we all love so much, From what he said the factory pads were hard and wear the rotors fast, and I should get ceramic, less dust, less wear.
Whats the deal, at this point I would rather replace rotors every couple years then deal with cleaning my wheels every other day.

a buddy of mine suggested bendix semi metallics... i like them. not much dust, good solid pedal feel. i just have regular stock steel wheels with hupcaps so. im not really concerened with keeping them clean. i can definitely see if you mave nice chrome set though.
