UnderCover LUX installed

I was searching for a tonneau cover and I almost bought a Retrax until I found out about UnderCover and talked to Kristine @ Hooze 4x4. She answered all my questions, researched the ones she couldn't answer off hand and called me back promptly, and she really made the difference. With the UnderCover LUX (painted version) being the same price as the Retrax, I decided to order it.

Yesterday, Kristine called to say that the UnderCover was in and I told her I would be at the shop in the afternoon. When I showed up, I noticed a few Dodge vehicles and an occasional Chevy truck which had me worried a little, but I decided not to hold that against them. It was a good thing, because it turns out they pimp out a lot of F150s and they know them well. Bonus!

All jokes aside, they brought the truck in and proceeded to install the UnderCover so that I could be on my way in no time. Now on to the pics (winter mode) before some more comments.

As I mentioned, it is a great product, no drill install, very easy to take on and off, and very good looking on the truck. I ordered it painted since it was cheaper than having it painted locally, but I was afraid of the color matching. The weird thing is that under certain lights (at Hooze, in my garage, or when overcast) it looks dead on, but when the sun is out the cover looks a little brighter (whiter) than the truck. Now, the White Tri-Coat Metallic is very hard to match and the materials are different, so a little difference is to be expected, and truthfully it is very close. Because I am very picky, I have a couple of issues, but they are so minor they are not worth mentioning and I am very happy with my purchase.

For any locals, Hooze 4x4 is a class shop. They are an hour away from me but they were worth the drive, very good folks running that shop. I know that I will contact them for any future needs.

Thanks for posting this. I've done a lot of research and had settled on the undercover since it is supposed to be easy to remove. Is it strong enough to put a cargo rack on it (max 500 Lbs)?

Less than 2 weeks from the time I first spoke to the shop and the time it was on my truck. UnderCover has the most popular colors ready fairly quickly.

Yes it is and I have plans for adding a rack on top. If you look at their marketing materials, you will find several pictures with numerous people standing on top of it at once.

LPMM, with a white truck it should be especially noticeable. Can you comment, and offer pics to how the cover fits on the front corners? Can you see the Plastic textured bed rail covers when the lid is closed? Can you offer pics of how it fits the front corners in a fully open position? All your pics are from the rear.

The color match is extremely close but not dead on. Now, keep in mind that I have the White Tri Coat Metallic and it is a royal pain to match and I think that unless the paint is applied the exact same way and the metallic flakes have the exact same orientation, you will notice a difference with certain light reflections. It is not UnderCover's fault, but rather a byproduct of the cool paints we choose for our trucks.

I would say that the paint is as close as you're going to get, and under certain lighting, it looks dead on. Also, when considering a painted top, it is cheaper to order it that way than having it painted locally, and UnderCover's paint quality is very good. So no real complaint and I am happy with it, but I wanted to point this out in case someone is wondering.

In all fairness, on my old truck I had a silver metallic Snugtop and it also had a slight color difference.

As for seeing the black bed rails, yes you can. This is a design UnderCover chose and it doesn't bother me since it shows on both sides. It's just a look preference I guess, not what I would call a manufacturing issue. Besides, I wonder if the fact that the Ford box has that bevel at the top influenced their design? The only QC issue I see is that the left front edge of the cover is not straight like the right one, it is a bit wavy.

The are two things bugging me right now, one is the UnderCover logo and its terrible location. It is in a area where two body lines run at different angles, and by choosing to line it up on a certain line, it looks crooked. The other is a constant squeak since the install. I'll try to rub a little silicone on the seals to see if it helps out, or else I'll chase the cause.

This may seem like a lot, but this is me being extremely picky to try and give you an idea. No cover is perfect and the UnderCover has a few quirks, but they are so minor that it shouldn't detract from buying it. Even the paint thing, I had the same thing happen with a Snugtop on my old truck, the color was slightly off.

Overall, it is a great product that is definitely worth considering. It comes well packaged, it is extremely easy to install, and it looks great on the truck, basically it does everything that was advertised. There are a lot of folks running Ford trucks here, and they all do a double take on it, perhaps because it is a HD or perhaps because of the UnderCover, most likely a little of both.

I'll take some more pictures to show different angles.

Nice looking cover! Glad you had a good experience at Hooze 4x4. I have talked to them a few times on the phone...they always were very helpful.

Looks really nice! I am in the Twincities, too. Looks like you have more snow than me, though. Man, what a bizarre winter!!

Here are additional pics of the front area, let me know if you want to see anything else.

Here is the area that could be better, the leading edge is wavy and not straight, unlike the passenger's side. IMO, It should have been caught at QC.

Those pics are absolutely perfect, thank you.

I am yet to see any covers that hide that black plastic perfectly, although I have a sneaky suspicion the ARE lid stands the best shot. Nobody else has been able to provide th absolutely dead on proper angle to show the less than perfect fit I have mentioned in several of these threads.

That said, the OEM Ford lid doesn't fit any better. There is one online in my city, used, and the wrong color for my purposes, but for the $400 price tag, I think I'm gonna scoop it up and squirt it blue.

Thanks for nailing the pics.

Unfortunately, I am not sure you will find something exactly to your liking. When looking at the Ford box compared to others, it has that beveled edged which also comes forward around the cab. I would guess that it is part, if not the main reason why tonneau manufacturers can't cap the rail entirely. With the way the top moves when lifted, I would think that a design covering the front edge of the rail would interfere and hit the bed each time. The front opening in the cover allows for the top to move freely without any damage to the vehicle.

I am not sure this is the reason, but at least it is my interpretation just by looking at the way things line up and I wouldn't call it a "less than perfect fit". As for the black showing, I can't say that it doesn't but you have to be standing next to the doors and you have to look for it to notice it. It is not as an eyesore as you would think, and it would be much less noticeable on a Blue truck. If you decide to paint the top yourself, you could always color match the rails to "blend" them in.

I believe the ARE http://www.4are.com/product/lsx_ultra/ scissor hinge design will allow for them to build a lid that hides everything better. Your cover (and the OEM one I bought yesterday) use a simple front box hinge that forces the lid manufacturer to cut the front of the lid back a little, and leave it short. For the $300 I paid for it, I'm gonna pretend I don't see the design Flaw myself too.
