Bedliner: Thoughts & Opinions Wanted

Alright, last summer I tried to do a "Do-It Yourself" spray on bedliner. It was more of a roll on really (Harbor Freight Special...). So, I guess I didn't prep it very well, but it's starting to come off. ..it looks like complete crap. Anyway, I'd love to put in a bedrug, but I'm afraid to do that with out a bed cover. So, I found an OEM Ford drop-in plastic liner on Craig's List.

See Pics:

My worries with Drop-In's (and this is more of what I'm asking, seeing as I've had no experience with them), Is that the plastic rubs against the metal and causes the paint to wear away and rust will start.

One thought that I had to prevent this, is to take some rubber strips and put them in the lower parts of the bed:

Horrible edit, I know but hopefully you'll get the idea.

Thoughts?
Opinions?

Good idea/waste of time?

Thanks!

If you want to install a bed rug you could make a wood liner and cover it with carpet then you wouldn't need the plastic liner. When I get the one done for this truck it will be the second one I have done, then my brothers will be the third one when we get his done.

I have to say I had the stock drop in in my Ranger for 5 years, when I pulled it out to do my body lift there was absolutly no scratches, rust or anything underneath it. Looked like new.

Well, this is only to keep the bed looking better before I get the bedrug.
I'd take out the Drop-In once I get the bedrug, but the Drop-In will be there until at least next summer.

But could you tell me more about this wood liner?

I've never heard or seen of one, any pics?
(I'm just trying picture it in my head, thanks)

Okay, that makes me feel better.
Thanks!

I've pulled out LOTS AND LOTS of drop-in bedliners out of trucks.

I can tell you that there is no "rhyme or reason" as to whether or not there is going to be damage. I suppose that some drop-ins do more damage, some do less. I pulled out a liner in a brand new Tundra and the liner had already rubbed the paint off on the wheel wells. I've pulled out drop-ins out of 3 year old trucks and they had very little damage.

So, it's a crap shoot as to whether or not you will get damage. I will tell you that if there is damage, most of the time it's on the floor and wheel wells.

x2 I agree. The last two of my personal trucks I had, when I pulled the drop in out it was scratched to heck and back on the floor with minor rusting. But we pulled a drop in out of a 2001 f150 HD the other day and it looked brand new underneath except the tailgate.

Well, it's cheap enough that i think i'm gonna go for it.
I think that if it screws it up when i take it out (hopefully it'll only be in there a year or so), that will be a good excuse to get line-x!
thanks guys!

The FORD drop-in are a quality piece and won't cause any issues, unless you already have issues. But, if your truck has a cheap drop in liner, you'll be dealing with the same issues that I'm dealing with...

Zombie, I've had my liner in my truck for about 3 years now and looked under it a few times and can see no significant damage and since I bought the truck slightly used, those little scratches might have already been there. Take into consideration, too, that I live in an arid enviroment. I will tell you though, that I hate the thing because it is slicker than snot on a doorknob and everything that goes in the bed of my truck has to be restrained in someway or it will fly around like a country girl at her first square dance, so be prepared to own lots of bungee cords. Good Luck.

Bob

Well...
I went for it. Like I said earlier, I didn't pay too much for it,
so I think that I can get my money back if need be;
but for the 5 hours that I've had it, I'm pretty happy with it.
I know it's just a bedliner, but I'm still excited...

Here's some pics (I mean who doesn't like Pics, right?)

Hopefully a Bedcover in the next week or two.
I've been leaning towards the Extang Trifecta.
Any thoughts on that, or on the liner now that it's in the truck?
