pace edwards&rollback vs bakflip

With the pace edwards full metal jackrabbit or the rollback cover, can you still fit a bike in the back of the truck with a bed extender on a 5.5 inch bed? My buddies and I have downhill bikes and they have very long wheel bases compared to your average mountain bike.

I know the specs on the roll canister covers say 15 inches, but does the top of the cover where the handle is completely retract into the roll or does stop before the roll? So 15 inches plus whatever length the handle is?

I love the looks of the bakflip and how it sits flush with the bedrails but I just don't like how it folds up completely to block the back window if you need to use the bed.

Are these roll covers flush like the bakflip and leak proof too?

If you have some pictures of these guys I'd love to see them. I'm not really interested in other covers.

I have the PE rollup tonneau. It leaks, but handles the weight of snow well, and it does keep things dry for the most part. Having a plastic bedliner helps because the water flows between the grooves keeping items dry, unless the bed fills with water

The cover retracts completely into the canister. I'd say the canister is about 10" x 10" in size. You should be able to fit a bike in there without a problem. What's the length of the bike?

I have some pics in my gallery. See sig for link.

Thanks. The wheel base on the bike is 77-78". I figure 10 inches plus the 77 is still plenty left over. Should fit no problem.

I've got a dual liner mat in my bed. Does it leak through every rib? or just at the front and rear of the cover? I don't mind a little bit of water coming in (drips) but if it is a river that might be a deal breaker.

Thanks!!!

Hey, no problem!

No, the cover itself doesn't leak at all. It's solid and strong. The water gets in around the tailgate and I think the rest gets in along the tracks on each side.

This is a lousy phone pic, but you can kind of see a small hole where the canister is to allow the lock (where you use the key to ock cover) to slide in when it's fully retracted. My cover is a few years old now, but I think the newer PE covers are completely flush including where the top of the canister is.

If you are thinking about the PE Full Metal, you should consider TruckCoversUSA. They are priced about the same but TruckCoversUSA is a superior cover.

The TCUSA cover is interlocking double walled aluminum which can hold over 500 pounds. The canister is the smallest of any retractable cover at only 8" x 8". Cover has 4 drain tubes instead of the typical 2.

PE slats are not double walled and are not interlocking and has a significantly larger canister. No more than 200 pounds on the cover is recommended.

Do the interlocking joints leak on the TCUSA?

It looks like the newer PE 's have changed. Mine has some type of heavy gauge vinyl overtop the interlocking metal.
That's why the cover itself doesn't leak.

I can fit my Trek Fuel in my 5.5' bed with the Bakflip with plenty of room left over.

sbchris: Nope, the slats are sealed underneath the cover with a Teflon seal tape.

last5oh_302: Sounds like you might have the Jack Rabbit (vinyl laminated aluminum) instead of the Full Metal Jacket (black powdercoated aluminum).

Thank you soo much TruckGasm. Looks like I'm 100 percent sold on the smaller canister from Truck Covers USA and the 500 pound limit. No more worries when the snow piles up.
