Fiberglass tonneau with "spoiler" on 07 HD

lookin for some help here....I went and looked at an HD f150 last weekend and it had this fiberglass tonneau on it. The cover goes up at the back to look like a small molded in spoiler type thing (this is on a 5.5' screw bed). That tonneau was not installed correctly and it overhung the bedrails by a good amount and thus had chipped away quite a bit of paint along the bed rails down to bare metal. Also one of the hinges at the front of the bed was installed wrong and had at one point actually scraped paint off the back of the cab (and was now rusted).

Now I went to look at one last night (which I wound up buying) which has the same tonneau and IT is also installed wrong...it overhangs one side of the bed by way too much and looks like it fits the other side just right or perhaps a little too tightly. I dont think these hinges are scraping the cab but the front of the tonneau is touching the back of the cab when open and rubs against it while opening or closing. And this one wont close all the way.

What is the deal with these tonneaus?

Anyone know what brand it is so I can take it to a dealer to have it put on correctly?

Any thoughts?

Thats the one that had chipped the bedrails...but at least it closed.

That is a Gaylord lid out of California it is the SpeedSturr wing lid. They are a decent cover way overpriced for the quality you get. Their hinge system leaves alot to be deisred as well, and costs extra. You said on the second cover it fit good on one side and not the other then they should have looked at that when installing and split the difference. They have to fit away from the bed in the front to prevent the lid from hitting the bed side when opened. These need to be professionaly installed by someone that has some experience doing tight fitting covers and not doing any damage during the install, such as the cab being hit by the hinge.

I have sold a few Gaylords and didn't really care for them compared to and ARE the quality just isn't there. Also for warranty work you have to send it back to them directly and pay the shipping (which now is around $300) unless you buy it at an actual stocking dealer that gets truck deliveries from Gaylord. They are available at money online places and that is where you are gonna get screwed.

thanks! I actually just stopped by an ARE dealer last night (didnt know where else to look) and the guy spotted the gaylord name on one of the hydraulic things. I e-mailed them via their website last night in hopes of finding a local dealer who I can take it to to have the install corrected...we'll see how that goes.

After seeing the AREs last night I must agree with you about the quality. The speedsturr is flat across the back of the cab and look weird whereas the ARE covers are contoured to match the back of the cab and look much better. I must admit that I like the little integrated spoiler on the gaylord though...wouldnt get me to spend my own dollars on the gaylord instead of the ARE but its kinda cool to have.

At any rate the price the guy gave me on an ARE was like 985 painted. I cant see myself spending that kind of money on a tonneau....in my opinion that money would be better spent on a spray-in bedliner and a more functional bed cover (like the truxedo deuce my other truck has).

I agree- the quality of the covers from hinges, latches and fit are very poor. I ended up building a flush mount myself out of aluminum and covered with a padded landau material, built my own hinges and latches. Total cost was $800. I can't tell you how many times I've been stopped on the road and even the dealers ask where I bought the cover!

At that price the ARE dealer showed you the LSII model and that one although superior to the Gaylord isn't the best one for the Ford. The LSX is the best model to go with on a Ford. They have snug fit all the way around the bed even in the front and contours around the bed better than the LSII. They use a new scissors hinge in the front that rotates the lid up away from the bed and allows it to have a great fit and finish. It also has integrated keyless entry and interior lock shroud with integrated light. I don't know what they sell them for at the dealer you went by but from the other price I would say it is around $1195, I sell them for $1095.

You said the price of $985 was to high, you better be glad that one came on the truck those Gaylords normally sell in the $1500-$2000 range depending on where you get it.

It's actually a good looking top. I think the little wing looks great on a (lowered) street truck..... But would look wrong on a 4wd or off road styled truck like my own.

Either way, If I got a Gaylord cover, I'd hope the brand name tag was removeable..... Then when somebody asked me what brand, I'd tell them, "Uhhh.... I'm forgetting right now" :-)

Love my Snugtop. Don't mind the name.... but the little stick on name tag had some silver and red in it, so now it's stuck on my wall, right above the PC :-)
