Here's my homemade Tonnue Cover. I got in a hurry and forgot to take pics when I was putting it together. I went ahead and made a drawing to show how I put the wood together. I used wood because that's what I had to use you can use what ever material you want, my plans are just something to start off with. That's why I didn't put in any dimensions.
I started off with angle iron to connect to the inside of the truck bed rails. I used bed frame rails(free). I didn't want to put holes on top of my truck bed rails and thats why I used the angle iron instead to connect my tonnue cover too.
Here's a diagram of what I did.
My wood frame is light enough that I can take it on/off by myself. The frame is covered with a durable heavy duty vinyl tarp. After the tarp is wrapped around the frame the eyelets are connected with bungee cord to help keep it together. Once you place the tonnue cover on the truck and have it bolted down, the tarp will be a little loose. After a few days in the sun the tarp starts to shrink and becomes tight across the frame.

I want one for my truck, but I have a toolbox... I have wanted to make one but never put enough thought into it or even tried. How do suggest I make one to fit with my toolbox? Its a shortbox BTW..
First thought would be to make pretty much the same as mine but, maybe with one bow. Also, depending on what type of tool box you have, maybe hinge the cover to the tool box.
I take that back. I would go ahead and use 2 bows but, maybe put them on the ends instead of centering them. Make the bows as tall as the tool box. This would also have to be hooked up like mine; instead of trying to hinge it.
