So my mom was hounding me what I wanted for X-Mas. I told her I wanted one of the flush mount diamond plate truck boxes. You know, Husky brand, Home Depot special at about $250 or so. Anyhow, I got to looking at them. How the heck to they get secured to the bed? The regular boxes get bolted through the top and into the top of the bedrail, but the flush mounted ones don't have any holes or tabs or anything for mounting. I'm sure as hell not drilling into the bed.
So I go to thinking, if there is no way to secure it, I'll make one. The bed already has some female threaded holes on the sides for mounting the storage sytem Ford offers, and I'm thinking I can drill through the sides of the toolbox, use some threaded rod and nuts and washers to connect the box directly to the inside of the bed walls using the stock points already there. Anyone think this would work?
What kind of box are you talking about exactly, a chest that sets on the bed floor or a low-profile crossover? If it is the chest then your idea of using threaded rod and going to the factory threaded holes is a good idea but you don't want to do it. Due to the fact that the bed flexes and will just cause the rods to woller out the holes, that is unless your one of the majority that your truck never sees anything but pavement.

I *think* he's talking about the box that is similar to mine in style, only the top isn't as tall. It sticks up about 2" (height of the lid basically).

Yes they do...
I just re-read his post, and I now think he's talking about the inbetween the bed rail types... For those, your strongest and safest way to secure them is to drill straight down through the tool box and into the bed. Secure it with some strong bolts. If you use wood screws I will drive out there and help you kick your own ass.

I actually stopped by a truck accessory place and they have the black diamond plate ones and they secure under the bed rail and bolted to the box on the inside. you just need to drill a few holes in the toolbox, depending on the height of your bedrails. i just hope they come out easy enough too...i'm getting line-x'ed, but not before the box. me and my sister's bf are taking our trucks in together sometime in january to get a deal on the spray.

I have seen that box that comes with Hangers so it can be taken out as needed. That might be the option to look at. DFW CamperShell has this version of the box. The hangers are somehow attached on the inside of the box and cannot removed unless you open the lid.
