Question Bed extender with a bed cover

Hi Ford folks! this is my first post on this site.
I need help on selecting a retractable bed cover on my new 2005 Super cab 4 x 4, four door with the 5'5" bed, with a bed extender. Called Pace Edwards and was told I need at least 3" Clarence on each side, I have only
2 1/2 ".

I also need to know if a spray on liner will impede the extender operation as well as the roll back bed cover ( if I can find one that will fit).
I know it is a lot to ask but I jut hope someone will have an answer.
Thank you

Can't help on the cover bit....

The spray in liner will be fine providing they tape off the holes that the extender locks into. Forgot to tell them to on mine and it is a real pain now to use it.

I have a PE rolltop cover and a bed extender. The extender cannot rotate because of the portion of the rolltop that runs along the rails. Other than that, no problemo

Actually I still use the extender as a sort of "bed management" device to keep things from rolling back under the PR rolltop cannister (which is a real PIA at times)

Well now I thank you good folks for giving me the information I needed.
I took you advice and did have the bed sprayed by Rhino and did tell them about the holes for the extender THANKS for that bit of advice. I did check with PE and was told that the I needed 3" clearance, the extender only had 2 1/2 " clearance so I voted PE down and went with the "Undercover" a very light weight plastic cover ( not fiberglass) and can be removed by one person very quickly by just pulling two pins at the cab end of the cover, and is lockable, it is very water tight, comes in black only.
Thanks again

My brother got an Undercover and loves it. Very easy to take off compared to a fiberglass cover. I still love my Retracks from truckgadgets.com Same place my brother got his. They seem to be very knowledgeable about all of the covers and they threw in some nice freebies.

I Installed the Undercover yesterday & it went on without a hitch, the factory bed extender also operates properly. I think you'll be very happy with your choice, I had also looked at Pace Edwards & Retrax but for my needs the Undercover was the way to go. I ordered mine on the internet from Autoanything.com & was pleased with them as well.

Thumbs up

I also want to tell you about Truck Gadgets.com I called and talked to a Mr. Ed ( Not the same TV Mr Ed! )
and boy was he knowledgeable about truck stuff. I was going to get the Retrax bed cover but got the Undercover instead. Mr Ed did say that the Retrax would allow the bed extender to clear the side rails of the Retrax but would not clear on the PE. I also liked the videos of the Retrax on the truckgadgets.com web site. IMHO Mr. Ed is the one to talk to about truck accessories as he is one nice person to deal with.

Same thing happened to me with line-x vader. Take a sharp knife or round file and clean out the holes and it will work great again!

Thumbs up Undercover with tailgate down

Hi all
I have just installed my Undercover and I must say it is just great, looks good and works as advertised. I also have the Rhino spray on bed liner all acquired because of the information I received from the good Ford forum folks here, I thank you.

Now all you Undercover experts/users I have a question.
Has anyone driven at highway speeds with the tailgate down and the Undercover locked in place? Reason I ask is the instructions warn not to drive with the tailgate down, but if you have the bed extender, that I have, and it is in the extended position the tail gate must be down. I really don't want to have to remove the Undercover to use the bed extender for a short trip to town. I could use bungee chords to tie the Undercover down to the extender when the extender is in the extended position. All help and information help as you have given me in the past will be most appreciated.

Hi Earl! - I had read your post in the morning & later in the day had need to do what you describe, I also remembered the instructions saying not to have the tailgate open so I resisted trying it. I would think having the locks in the locked position the cover would stay down with the extender in or out & the tailgate open unless it created some kind of wierd airflow situation that could pry the rails off the truck? I as well would like to hear from others that have run around with the tailgate open & the cover locked down as it would be handy, I could have fit the rest of the trash in the truck yesterday if I could have safely had the use of the extender, now I have to make a 2nd trip to the "convenience center".

Hi all:

I posted (above) a question about driving with the Undercover locked down and the tail gate open and the bed extender extended. The instructions form Undercover warns not to drive with the tail gate open.
I see that LittleTow also would like to know the answer as to why not drive with the tail gate open and the bed extender extended, and the Undercover locked down.
I had a "Senior Moment" duh. Who best would know the answer to that question? Would it not be the good folks at Undercover? (another duh)
So I sent an email off to Undercover and asked them that very same question. Below is their answer. Case CLOSED! (or is that Undercover closed and tail gate open?)

Dear Earl,

Thanks for writing us concerning your bed extender. You should have no problem with your bed extender out and the tailgate open. The reason for our comment in the FAQ section is that customers should never drive with the tailgate down and material inside the bed without it being properly secured. Your bed extender should secure whatever you have in the back. Your cover will perform either way. Just be sure and secure anything you have in the back of your truck so that it does not fall out and pose a danger to other drivers.

Thank you for your purchase.

Sincerely,

David M. Wells

Hey Earl - Thanks for calling them & getting the "straight scoop", Im usually reluctant to call a company for support as often the folks that should have these type of answers dont or just "throw something out there" to get you off the phone it seems. Undercover is not this type of company in my (& your) experience as I had called them prior to purchase & they were on the ball.
Thanks Again for getting this question answered & out there for all to share!

^^^

I'll agree with that. The few times I called them they were quick to answer and actually followed up later to make sure the question was fully resolved.

Great support.

Sounds like the undercover is the way to go.
How much and where can I get it? I am hoping it is not priced like the fiberglass ones.

Wink www.truckgadgets.com/

SLOWTAN:
You can get the Undercover from this site: www.truckgadgets.com/ ( A Dallas,Texas company Call, Mr. Ed, @ 866-553-5655 ) Cost will be in the 5-7 hundred dollar range. I was quoted a $1200 price for a fiberglass one at a Ford dealer, so The Undercover was a lot cheaper for me. While cost is a major factor it was not the main reason I did not get a fiberglass one, the main reason, for me, for buying the Undercover, was the easy removal compared to the fiberglass one. A fiberglass will take two people and a lot of effort, as the Ford parts man said "it is a pain in the a-- to remove". Using a pickup truck for hauling will sooner or later will require the removal of the cover.
