4.6 to 5.4 2004 f-150
I'm thinking of doing a swap on a 2004. What would I need from a 5.4 donor for this swap? Any help would be greatly appreciated

as long as you use a 2 valve 5.4 you'll be fine with just the motor and the engine wiring harness if you can get it

So I wouldn't need the 5.4 computer? Just use everything that I have. So it would just be a plug and drive engine swap. What about the tranny it would be fine with the 5.4? Thanks

why is everyone so hung up on changing computers when changing motors???? it's the tranny that needs the ECM for than the motor, hence why you just get a tune

if you are switching from a 4r70 to a 4r100, or from a 4r100 to a 4r70 or from a manual to an automatic then yes you need the ecm, if not just have your existing ecm tuned

is there a difference in the 5.4 and 4.6 belts and is there anyway to make them interchange if they are different

Looking to change out my 2004 Ford F150 4.6 motor and trans to a complete 5.4 motor and trans from a wrecked 2005 F150. Can you tell me if this will be easy or not??

Do you have access to all of the wire harnesses from the wrecked truck? The 2004 4.6 computer does not have 3 valves so it is not set up to control the added functions of a 3 valve engine. You will need the 05 PCM to do this along with the harness. Mechanically it will bolt right in. If you change PCMs then you must have it programmed to the PATS keys of the 2004 truck. There are 3 connectors on the PCM. 175E for engine control. 175T for transmission control and 175B for the rest. I cannot say for sure that the 05 PCM will function with the other two connectors. Odds are that it will but you will have to figure that out yourself. I would recommend checking the 2004 4.6 transmission and body pinouts to the 2005 5.4 transmission and body pinouts.

Yes, I am looking at purchasing the entire complete wrecked 2005 F150 truck (same body style as my 2004 F150 ) with 5.4. Truck runs but left front is crunched. I was hoping to remove motor, tranny complete as a unit with wiring harness and reinstall into my truck. Dont want to do alot of mods if I can help it??? Do you think it can be done fairly easy??
Many Thanks

Hey guys new to the site and I just got an f-150 4x4 with a bad 4.6 so im looking to do a 5.4 swap . I have found a 2000 5.4 for 1100 local with 90k and a 6mo warrenty .If you guys know of a better deal let me know . The truck has a 5 speed i plan to tow my mustang street strip car with it . Im sure it needs a new clutch and I want a heavy duty unit . Is there a set up you guys are using ? Are the mustang clutches the same ? Oh and thanks for the swap notes there going to be very helpful .

since the topic is still going....
I have a 97 4.6 4X4, that is pretty tired. I would like to change to a 5.4. Sounds like my tranny will work.
Question is...up to what year of 5.4 can I use? I think even the two valve up'd the HP in later years. AND, I assume that the donar 5.4 can come from any vehicle?
Thanks all!
