Transmission Information Page

I have an '04 f150, I have blown the transmission(4r70w) twice in it now and now I'm pursuing changing the transmission completely. What exactly is linked in the computer system between the engine and transmission? Would a new transmission controller allow me to change the transmission or would their be some disagreement in the computer system? Is their a new efi computer, pcm, for the new modular 5.4L. What other transmissions would bolt directly to my motor, what adapter plates are avaliable?
-don't factor in tranfercase or the drveshafts fitting

so does this work and whats needed???
Forgive me if this has already been asked. I got thru 4 pages of posts and just wanted to ask this...
I used to work for a heavy equipment rental company and all of our truck chassis (flatbeds, dumps, etc.) were Ford SuperDuty's ranging from F350 to F750. When we got the new 6.0L deisels, they all had the 5 speed auto. I loved the way it performed; nice clean solid shifts never climbing above 1800 rpm and still had good acceleration (grant it was a deisel with far more off-idle torque than the gas 5.4 but I heard the 6.0's had issues)....
Will the 5R110 "torqueshift" mate up to a 2004 5.4 F150 4x4?
Do I need to use the super duty's transfer case?
If so what othercomponents? shorter rear drive shaft, longer front? or visa versa?
Will the computer accept a new program?
Given the lack of low-end/off-idle torque and the shear wieght of the 05-08 F150, I believe the extra spliting of gears would greatly help in the areas of acceleration and fuel economy. So is it possible?

Should be a sticker on the drivers side door. If not then normally the 5.4 had the e4od and the 4.6 had the 4r70, also the dipstick for the e4od says mercon on the handle and has a plastic "bullet" level indicator, the 4r70 says mercon V on the handle and the level indicator is metal with holes in it.

we have a 97 f150 4x4 and it is 4.6L and it is the 14 bolt pan 4r70w tranny
mercon v wasnt until later on years, and not on the sticks in 97, they just say mercon on the sticks in 97 i know
98 or sometime after 98 was a tsb for using mercon V in the older ones for shudder issues
good luck

I've got a 95 F250 4x2 with 351 and ZF5 trans (I'm sure, seen the ZF tag on the trans) but the trans code is W.
How can I tell if I have the s5-42 or s5-47? What is the difference? Is making it 4x4 as simple as buying the transfer case and 4x4 front axle?
I think my fluid is low or needs changing (1st won't engage unless stopped or I rev match, 2nd same but 5mph). I think I found the fill plug on the driver's side of the trans, and a drain on the bottom towards the back?
I know this thread isn't for the questions, but I couldn't get any results out of the search for zf5, s5-42 or s5-47.

Howdy, this is border line requiring a new thread, but anyway...
The s47 was introed in mid '96 as being a bit beefier with an increasing of 50 ft lbs input rating.
Try new Mercon ATF fluid. GM syncromesh is also a popular substitute. Ya got it right on the plugs. A suction gun for 10bucks at any parts store makes the job go quick. Fill until you can't put more in.
Thanks fer the code info of W. That must be the code for the 351 matched tranny.
Unfortunatly you need to change the tranny to one that can accept a bolt on of a transfer case and a splined output shaft. Also the small block (not 460 or diesel) 4x4 ZF is the most popular and desired unit for it's use in off road half ton applications, you can pay easily 1000 for one.

How can I search for the 4x4 ZF5 where I will actually get results? 1356?
