How to Remove Mirror Caps ('97-'03)

I removed my mirror caps the other day to give them a much needed color sand. As I've seen questions on how to remove the caps come up over the years, I snapped a couple quick pics of the removal.

Reference: 1999 F-150, F-250 Workshop Manual, Vol. 1, 501-09 (Rear View Mirrors)

Tools: Long, slender bladed screwdriver

1. Position mirror glass all the way down. Lift up on the two tabs exposed between the mirror glass and mirror housing at the top of the mirror

2. Position mirror glass all the way out. Roll down window. Push down one tab exposed between the mirror glass and mirror housing at the inner side of the mirror.

3. Position mirror glass all the way in. Push out on tab exposed between the mirror glass and mirror housing at the outer side of the mirror.

4. Remove mirror cap.

Pic of the inside of the mirror cap showing the tabs and the direction to move them to release the cap.

Thanks, Great write up. Will definitely be useful to me in the future when I get them repainted.

Years ago my parents had to replace the mirror on their truck and the body shop told them they needed to buy whole new ones cause they aren't removable. LOL this should save somebody else the money.

BTW does anyone know how to remove just the mirror glass?

MY 03 actually is a little different, you just have 2 tabs at the top to press down, and it rocks back then slides out. The tabs on the bottom are just guides, they dont actually grab anything...

Just FYI.

not too hard to take the glass off, but if you can do it this way this will keep from breaking the glass.

Very cool. Does anyone know if the "chrome" ones are indeed chrome or just the plastic crap?

I would assume they are chrome painted/dipped plastic, like the grills for instance

I think the one from my 02 are like 03Fx4JD's. I am not sure what the difference is other than perhaps they have a turn indicator built into them. In the pic you can see the 2 tabs at the top and 3 guides along the bottom.
