Nice write up and thanks for the idea, I did mine with different parts but it's the same concept. I took it for a short 10 mile cruise and didn't really notice much in acceleration or any intake noise. In fact it may be quieter than stock. One thing I noticed is at a stop in gear the idle will float around 520 where as it was floating at 530 before. The rig also felt like it was smoother running at idle. Hopefully maybe it might help my gas mileage a little. I custom tuned lvl 3 on the Edge 2 weeks ago and have been running 93octane and seeing 16-17mpg's. When I had it custom tuned on lvl2 on 87 I was seeing 14.5-15.5. Here are some pics of my $11 intake mod

Stock pipe next to my replacement which is 2' PVC 3"diameter and a flexible 3"-2"adapter. I ended up cutting the pipe to 10"

new piece painted and installed

From a distance

Fully flexed the accordion pipe, there's noway it's coming out of the fender.

Now I need to clean the rest of the bay up!

I also used a different materials cost was about 18 bucks but there was no modifications needed. I used intake tubing made by spectra, I bought mine at Oreilly Auto Parts. It is 3 in. in diameter and it has 2 collars. It took some muscle but I was able to put one end into the stock intake and secure it with a clamp. The other end has the collar on it and it slid easily into the fender. I did away with the rubber elbow since this tubing is expandable plus it is somewhat pliable making it easy to slide into the fender. Here is a couple pics, thanks to all the guys before me posting there methods and pics it was a great help.

Hey all. I'm a "noob" so bear with me here. I really liked this mod. I did it on my truck and had it dynoed myself. I saw a 7 hp gain. Later, I tried something a little different. Instead of going through the fender for air intake, I rerouted it. I Used a 3" ID street 90 and rerouted the pipe to draw air from under the driver side head light. It's not visible from the outside of the truck. It's not stock looking but it dynoed at a 11 HP gain. I also cut the silencers off the intake tube. Works great. I don't supposed any of this will cause a problem down the road will it?

Can you put up a pic of your rerouted intake? And how does the engine sound when you cut the mufflers off the intake because I am thinking about doing that but I dont know if its worth it. Thanks

I saw a pic of what appeared to be a 5.4 3v engine bay with a a stock 5.4 2v intake, if you are worried about cutting the silencer, maybe this will work better for you.

As far as the silencers go, you don't really notice any sound change until you going like 50 MPH then punch it. Then it sounds good.

I'm planning on doing an exhaust mod this weekend. Since I'm a poor boy, I'm going to try to modify the stock exhaust. If anybody is interested, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I did this mod earlier today on my '04 Lariat Supercab 4x4. I used the flexible aluminum dryer vent hose. Screwed right into the fender and the intake. It will flex when the engine torques and since I left the hose compressed, there is plenty of room for flexing, if needed. Saw an immediate change in the throttle response, especially from a dead stop. Still a little lag when passing, but nothing like before the mod. Took all of 30 minutes to do, even with my 5 yr old granson "helping"....lol.
Was getting 15.8 mpg locally before mod, so will be interesting to see effect after a tank or two. Will let you guys know. Total cost: ~$9. Well worth the cost, just for the improved throttle response, unless I see a drop in mpg.

I just got around to purchasing the alternate rigid 3 inch tubing that fordmt08 used for his intake modification and it looks like it will work well installed a couple of different ways. The tubing required is made by Spectre Peformance. It is part number 8741 for the black color (8742 is Red, 8746 is Blue, 8748 is Silver) and it is called: 3" Flexible Air Duct. It is priced ~$20 and should be available at O'Reilly Auto Parts and Autozone stores. I installed it completely collapsed using one of the two connectors that come with the kit to go into the fender inlet and using the downspout connector to connect to the stock flexible section. It fits perfectly and does not require any hose clamps. I will be testing it out with my Gryphon Custom 87 performance and Custom 87 towing tunes this week. This variation completely eliminates any possibility of the downspout connector collapsing or getting sucked inside out.

The downspout connector information:

One rubber downspout connector from the plumbing section of Lowe's or Home Depot. (Lowe's item number 23455)
