Thanks. Yeah that's the main reason I never got a Roush grille. Looks like a PITA to fix should it start chipping. A while back I did end up pulling off the last tint I got put on the sides (5%). So I'm back to stock on the rear sides and 15% on the front sides. I just got tired of not being able to see anything at night. We have a lot of people walking around here at night.

Still no ticket for the windshield, though.

Mine on my '99 are rusting anywhere the plastic meets the metal. I was planning to remove all the plastic, sandblast them, re-install just the end caps, then either have them Line-X'd or shoot them myself with Duplicolor bedliner material. My conundrum, though, is that the bolts that hold the end caps on are rusted solid. Already broke one trying to get them off.

Any comments on my approach?

Andy

Sounds like a great plan--I think sandblasting is a perfect way to prep the surface. Just feeling the rails after blasting them gave me a lot of confidence. The surface was perfect.

I'd try some PB Blaster or WD-40 and soak the crap out of those end cap bolts. If they break you can always use one of those screw extractor bits and get them out that way. Those bolts are held in with Tinnerman clips (clip nuts), so you will probably have to replace those as well. I had to buy some clip nuts and bolts to put my rails back on, because I tossed the old ones. Thought I'd never put them back on.

I never know what those speed nuts were called. Learn something new every day!

Since I'm planning to use bedliner material, I wonder just wire brushing would be adequate. It would sure be cheaper, and I'm not worried about a perfectly smooth surface. And once any remaining rust is sealed up, I'd think it would stop it's progression(?).

then you should be good to go once you get the rust under control.

the liner wont stick to the plastic caps so youll have to put those back on after its lined

Crap. They look like hell, too. Faded and scuffed in a few spots. Any way to make it stick? Paint them with Krylon Fusion, then bedliner spray, maybe?

i doubt the paint will make them stick. its just not made to adhere to plastic. can anyone weld caps on the ends for you and then you dont have to worry about it?

The "caps" are about 6" long, so unfortunately it's not that simple. I'll have to experiment, I guess.
