Roush Grille Removal Question.

I'm thinking about removing my Roush grille from my chrome surround and installing it into a painted surround.

My Question is: Can i break all the small black plastic pieces on the roush grille that push against the surrounds clips to get the the two seperated and then snap the roush into a painted surround with no problem or will the surround be loose because of those darn broken black pieces? Do i really need the black pieces to hold the clips and surround in place? Has anyone ever had to do this before?

Reason i ask is i tried to bend back 2 plastic pieces and broke both.

Thanks for all help and reply's

when i remove my grill to paint i usually wind up breaking a tab on the surround , not the grill

you can use a blow dryer to heat up the tabs, then take a screw driver and gently pry them apart

Yeah in not worried about the clips from the surround, i think id be able to pop them off without breaking any. Its the black tabs on the roush grille and other grilles to for that matter that push up against the grille surronds clips that im talkin about.. There just brittle, even when i try to tweak the tab over alittle it breaks at the bottom, did it with my honeycomb grille to, i just broke every tab off. Thats why i asked would it still snap in tight without those stupid black tabs or should i just buy a whole nother roush grille.

Ditto with the hair dryer trick. It works like a charm...

Actually a heat gun works better than a hair dryer, just be careful and hold it inplace for only 5 seconds, then pry the tab sideways, took me nearly under 5 minutes to remove my OEM grill from my surround doing this. Without strong heat its impossible to do it without breaking tabs.

I would say no. Do not break them. They will come apart but it definitely takes some patience. The heat gun works but if you don't have one then just leave the grills in the house for a day or until they've warmed up to room temp (didn't look at your location, if it's warm then disregard). I used a knife in conjunction with a small screwdriver with the grill being supported in the middle. Like this:

That allowed me to push the grill and the surround in opposite directions so they would pop apart. Some of the clips I could slide my knife into separating them which freed up both hands to pull surround and grill apart.

Does that make sense?

Cool, i can do that..I just didnt know if it was important to save those tabs or not cause if it were up to me id bust them all out, there soo brittle. I think the surround would still snap in tight but ill remain patient and try to save them. lol.. Thanks for the help..

If you break all the grill tabs off that grill can never stay in another surround again. I'd definitely try to not break any.

It will stay without the tabs since it has a metal support on both sides but it is not in there correctly and the surround will move back and forth in the center on the bottom since it's not attached to anything.

Just take the time to heat it up with a hair dryer or heat gun and do it the right way if you plan on reusing either piece. I just took off my FX2 grille without breaking a single tab on the grille or surround. One other thing...... when you reinstall the shell on the new grille use the hairdryer again to heat up the tabs and push them back down with a screwdriver to get a tight fit all the way around. After you're done you won't be concerned with the grille since it was done the correct way.
