Post What's biggest tire size for spare area (285/75R16)?

Hey all,
On a '98 4x4 supercab short box.

Anyone know if a 285/75R16 will fit up into the spare tire area? I really hate to buy new rims (16x8) to run 285/75R16's, but if I can't get them into the spare area then I probably won't get them and stick to 265/75R16's.

I don't know if the 'spare' space is all the same from model to model, but your answer may lie here if they are all the same:

Well thats a relief. Now that I have the 285s on my truck the 235 spare definetly won't cut it. Now I just need to find an old one to mount on my spare rim.

How close is anyone's exhaust pipe?

I'll probable have to move my Gibson since it was put in with the stock spare and positioned in the middle of clearances. Now that maybe too close for 285/75r16.

Is that the stock 16x7 wheel? Looks like a 265, because the sidewalls don't look 'pinched' at all, but the way it fills the area, I'm sure it has to be a 285.

Does anybody know how tall a 285/75/16 is compared to say, a 255/70/16? If 285's fit on the stock wheels like that, I really wish now I had gone bigger!

I'm also wondering about the exhaust. Mine just barley clears the 255 I've got. Had to even offset the spare as I cranked it up. Probably didn't cut far enough on the stock exhaust to attach the muffler closer to the cats. It's welded now, oh well, that's another forum.

I just noticed that DAVENSA is running 315 Geolanders. I would guess this is his tire size. These have to be much taller then the 285 he has as a spare? Not wanting to beat a dead horse, but if he puts that spare on, I would think 'nasty' things will happen to his axles?

Just trying to figure this whole tire size/spare tire size issue out.

I am not a tire expert - I rely on you guys for advice. I did however find a tire size calcualtor that I sent to my friends. If anyone needs it let me know. You can find me in chat every night & I can look it up & send it to you. I THINK it was at Dunn Tire but I am not 100% positive. Good luck!

My 97 4X4 Supercab had no problems with the 285 spare. It was tight and took a little finesse, but no problem. I have duals coming out underneath the rear bumper with no problem with the spare.

I have my 285/75/16 spare mounted in the stock location just fine.
Boy is it a pain to get that big a$$ tire
in and out of there. Luckily I haven't had to touch it since I put it there.

Well I see that a 285 fits fine but what about the weight on that little cable! How much can It actually hold? I've heard of people saying that their spare fell of on the freeway because the cable snapt.

What Trailmaster lift is that one? Have not heard of the 6" lift yet. Where did you get it?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

The fact that a 285 is smaller than a 315 shouldnt matter too much. Cars run with the micro sized spares. I would guess the only probs youd run into are when you have an LS rear end...in which case id think you need to do a bit of tire swapping.

Well the question was would a 285 fit.....not if I have a 315 spare......I have no axle in the front so it wouldnt bother it....I will be getting a large spare before I go on any long road trips......Dave

oh...and no it wont fit under the truck, it will go in the bed.....
